Officials report street improvements are underway with curb digging on Douglas Avenue. The note urges permanent, well distributed use of city funds and highlights Jewett Avenue where property owners are funding improvements. Residents are encouraged to follow Jewett’s example.
Superintendent of schools Hill suffered a three inch head wound after a discus hurled into the crowd at a Liberal Kansas track meet. He was struck on the shoulder first, then the throw clipped his head as the crowd dodged the outdistancing competitor. The accident was not fatal but caused serious injury.
The special term of District Court set for May 1 and 15 was postponed and no further sessions are expected until September.
The town prepares for Decoration Day and Memorial Sunday in May 1917 with patriotic tributes to Civil War heroes. W T Quinn and The Herald editor lead arrangements and call for community cooperation, promising a program next week and urging residents not to shirk duty.
Superintendent Hill reports Beaver High School has been approved for 18 units and is fully accredited with the State University. President Brooks of O U congratulates Hill, praising the community’s progress and loyal support from local businesses and citizens.
The Herald reports the Beaver High School graduating class of 1917 will hold commencement exercises Friday at 8:00 PM. The program features a motto FOR AMERICA, flowers Jasmine and Magnolia, colors Mother of Pearl and Gold. Superintendent W Homer Hill and Principal Miss Lena Wright oversee the event.
Mrs. John E. Swain and children with her mother Mrs. A Munger arrived Friday to spend the summer at their farm near Blue Mound in the county. They visited Judge and Mrs. H D Meese while in Beaver. Mrs. O J Loofbourrow has been ill for a week, confined to bed though improving at times.
