Washington reports Secretary Hay and officials discuss disturbances in the Isthmus and Booth American reputiton. They contend the issue is not yet causing a serious crisis and note past dispatches of ships to southern waters. A warship will be sent to the Pacific via the Panama route, with confirmation that either the ship or the Ranger will depart from San Francisco.
San Francisco on August sixteenth reports a massive explosion after use of explosives to remove Arch Rock, a landmark obstruction in San Francisco Bay. The blast created a water upheaval, the echo reaching across the city, with casualties and property damage noted.
In New Baden Illinois on August 12 Anton Griesbaum Jr. notes a woman with severe female trouble suffered and could not do housework. After three boxes of Dodd’s Kidney Pills her health improved dramatically and she is now able to work. The remedy is advertised as a cure for Bright’s Disease Diabetes Dropsy and Rheumatism.
In Tuscaloosa Alabama on August 16 a mob of about 56 men forced entry to the jail at dawn to seize Henry Pratt, a colored man accused of attempted assault on Sallie Dice. Sheriff Kyle armed with a shotgun repelled the attackers, who fled after he warned them he would shoot if the prisoner was harmed. A rumor linked the mob to another alleged assault on Anna Cobb.
Conv Yatow accepted the resignation of H Payson of Waterlon from the state claims commission. Payson was appointed by the governor a week earlier. Records in Kansas show Payson spent 18 months at the state penitentiary for defrauding Lena McNeill, sentenced May 1, 1880, and pardoned by Gov St John.
Havana August 1 the trial of Thompson formerly postmaster at Havens ended with a conviction He is to pay a base of 100 or serve six months in jail He allegedly arranged four money orders for 100 each to cover the drawer’s balance while acting as postmaster Lawton Fort Sill Oklahoma is to see new rail construction with a temporary terminus at Lawton This story also notes Campbell racing star offered 10000 as a panel hitter position and a management proposal for Tosala’s Crainage stables in St Petersburg.
A delegation of Creek people from Indian Territory met Acting Secretary of the Interior Ryan in Washington on August 10 to protest the division of their lands into individual holdings by the Dawes Commission. Ryan said their people had previously agreed with the U S stance and that the government retains discretion in the matter.
New York Aug. 10 The Brews reports J Pierpont Morgan aims to form the greatest labor union of the age uniting labor with capital. Plans include allocating stock of the United States Steel Corporation and a large pool of capital for vast employer integration across industries.
