Four miles from Beaver Oklahoma the county Red Cross chapter reports a large weekly shipment of finished garments. The total includes 6,316 hospital garments 2,365 surgical dressings and 901 knitted items with many socks and wristlets counted as pairs. The county leads Southwest Red Cross work and workers are praised for their record.
Beaver County Free Fair will run September 17 to 19, 1918 with prizes for Red Cross exhibits including 25 dollars first, 15 dollars second and 10 dollars third for best display of Red Cross work such as three pajama suits two bed shirts and three pairs of socks. Junior Red Cross prizes include 10 dollars first 5 dollars second and 2.5 dollars third for best county junior auxiliary display along with 5 and 2.5 dollars for knit sweaters and 6 and 3.5 dollars for handmade American flags. County Superintendent G T Ayers was briefly in Tilmois visiting relatives due to his father’s illness.

A D Hess longtime Beaver County resident and Herald patron died July 24 after an appendectomy in Hutchinson. Born January 24 1865 near Utica New York he leaves his widow and two sons Harry C Hess of Griescow Montana and Merritt C Hess at home plus five siblings and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Johnson parlors with a Presbyterian pastor delivering the tribute. Hess known as a ranchman on Kiowa River and a steady partner in home and business was widely mourned.
A July 10 gathering at Mr. Salzmann’s Blue Mound home honored Fred Balxman and Tom Ledbetter as they prepared to enter the 22nd draft. Tom, new to Alabama, made many friends. Fred, from Chicago fourteen years ago, left with best wishes from the community. Updates include Gate Valley work on a derrick, Reo roadster purchase, and Eula Norton’s medical operation after a Sunday accident.
R. L. Hammon of Madi son now Beaver announces this week as a candidate for justice of the peace in Beaver district. Hammon has 17 years as justice, has done special study of law, and pledges fair, lawful conduct. He asks support at the coming primary.
