The writer condemns caricaturing farmers as rubes with alfalfa whiskers and a pitch fork, calling it libel against Americas best class. Farmers are presented as well off, with homes and bank investments, and many are heavy depositors and directors who cannot be fooled by misrepresentation.
A letter from Dr Levi now in Liberal announces he cannot take more Beaver rest appointments due to busy Liberal practice. He offers to respond to special calls when needed and expresses regret at leaving Beaver patients but welcomes future calls.
Fol som Variety store will wind up affairs in about three weeks. Mr Folsom plans to move to Alva to take charge of his father's store, as the old gentleman retires. Bea Yer expresses regret at losing the establishment and notes the good trade and satisfactory service given to customers.
Swatters 1 Board of Beaver County Oklahoma issues a draft entrainment notice listing registrants to be called between April 21 and 26 1918 with preparations required. Names include Jessie L Wright Walter R Jeffers Johnnie E B Hensey Clifford F Howard and others with alternate selections and local offices listed. By H J Welch Chairman.
Residents celebrate another period of beneficial rain across Beaver County. After travel to La Kemp and Lone Star, observers report widespread farming activity and signs of soil moisture improving crop prospects.
Phelps Brothers new garage is going up in fine shape and, if weather holds, will be ready for occupancy soon. The site shows a solid, attractive structure adding value to the area.
Lakemp citizens staged a major Red Cross and Liberty Bond Day auction and sale. Netted $7 10.00 for the Red Cross and Liberty Bonds totaling $11 490.00, with an Invincible Pete Steffen sale bringing $172.60 for a calf. Red Cross workers served lunch. town eateries closed to support the effort. The day, from afternoon to late night, raised strong funds and inspired pride for Lakemp.
W L Henson of Lakkemp announces his bid for the Beaver County Superintendent of Public Instruction. He was educated in Hil hols and taught eight years in that state before moving to Beaver County in 1908. He has served as principal at Sunset and LaKemp schools and is a member of the County examining Board for a third year.
A county delegation organized a Beaver County Red Cross Branch at Lone Star schoolhouse. The meeting drew large turnout and Attorney Stacy Wells delivered a stirring talk. Officers elected: Chairman Mrs. A. W. Kent, Vice Chairman Mrs. Holland, Secretary Treasurer Mrs. F. W. Phillipe, Finance Chairman J. J. Duerson, Membership Chairman A. W Kent, Supplies Chairman Mrs. J. L. Duerson. Attendees from Beaver included Stacy Wells and several others.
Sophia Branch conducted a peg drive and collected 180 dozen pegs. J. H. Shearer bought them and paid 25 cents more per peg, netting the branch $64.00. It was described as an original, splendid plan with no known originator.
An East St Louis speech by former President Taft condemns mob violence and calls for lawful punishment of spies and traitors. The letter notes a 1919 race riot in East St Louis and contrasts lawful justice with Germanic savagery imagery. The excerpt also mentions a Muskogee dispatch on German language classes in a high school and local newspaper circulation confusions.
Dispatches from Boyce, Louisiana report a restaurant employee named Lewis was subjected to crowd punishment. He was reportedly lashed with a hundred lashes and tarred and feathered after remarks deemed offensive. The crowd forced him to shout insults before ordering him to leave town.
