Port Pirie Cycling and Local Sports Roundup
The Georgetown district reports a Port Pirie cycling exhibition at the Institute on April 29 with local riders. St Mary’s tennis club hosted St Mark’s of Port Pirie on April 23 but damp weather halted the all day match. The table tennis season opened with Baptist Club’s defeat at Laura, a social night, and a poorly attended Social Dance Club meeting leading to a recess. Local residents traveled to Canberra, Sydney, and the Blue Mountains. The football club opened the season at home, losing to Gladstone but showing improvement by players including Smallacombe, Phillis, Mey, and Myatt, with Ken Noonan captain and Gerald Noonan president. Arch Thomson of Burnside shot three wild turkeys in a single line. April rainfall was 0.35 inches, total 4.60 inches for 1939, frost persists, feed growth affected. Golf held two 9-hole events. F. Angley won the men’s, R. Inglis the ladies’ trophy. Mrs. E Reichmann and husband arrived in the Ormonde. Isabel Kennedy, visiting locally as Miss Kennedy, later married and became an exile to Australia.
