Smith Hopes to Land by a Recount in Ninth District Nomination

The Eighth Congressional district plans a recount of the Republican nomination results after close final canvass. William M. Smith of St Johns filed in Saginaw county claiming errors as Bird J. Vincent leads by 140 votes district wide. Recounts begin in Clinton Shiawassee and Sonia counties Tuesday with Montcalm Monday and Saginaw and Gratiot Friday. Results expected within a week to settle the winner.

Synod Chooses Alma Michigan for Next Year's Meeting

The Presbyterian Synod of Michigan selects Alma as next year’s meeting city, to be held June 27 to July 3 in Alma College buildings. Delegates will stay in college dormitories, with potential for Alma to become permanent meeting site. Notable speakers included Robert Speer and Dr. Vance. sessions expanded to include conferences and daytime talks on current issues.

The Isabella county Sunday school convention will be held at Blanchard on October 5 and 6. It promises to be the most interesting convention yet in the county with speakers including President Warriner of Mt. Pleasant Normal and Rev. Henry Morgan of Mt. Pleasant.

Presbyterian Church Reopens After Repairs Sunday

The Presbyterian Church resumes services next Sunday after a period of repair and redecorating. Rover and Son of Fort Wayne led painting using five caustic coats and a creamy tan palette. The Ladies Aid Society plans to buy a new carpet and kitchen dishes. A rally at 10:00 a.m. precedes an 11:00 a.m. dedication with a special musical program. Evening services feature High School and College Christian Endeavor, plus Rev. Eleston speaking on Echoes of the Synod.

Duffey Returns To Alma Again

Rev. M. W. Duffey, pastor of the First Methodist Church of this city, is reappointed to Alma for another year after the Methodist conference at Albion. His return was greeted by the church and local friends as list of assigned M. E. pastors for the coming year includes Bannister, Schueter, Liddicott, Dunbar, Tones, Lahrop, Oldt, Bell and Carr among others.

Republican County Convention elects 13 delegates

The Republican county convention meets in Ithaca this afternoon to select thirteen delegates for the state convention on September 28 at Muske gon. Before the gathering, county Republican nominees met at the courthouse to pick the county committee to serve for the next two years.

Sunday School Convention to Be in Ithaca

Ithaca will host the Sunday School Convention at the county seat over Saturday and Sunday. Officials announced plans for gatherings, services, and meetings featuring local church groups and regional delegates.

Alma College Attendance Rising Beyond Last Year

Alma College opened a week ago yesterday and shows a 20 percent increase in four regular classes, up from 15 percent. When including special students, total enrollment likely reaches 200 before the year ends, surpassing last year’s attendance records and setting new ones in progress.

Barkley Will Bequeaths Alma College Endowment Gifts

The late Dr. James M. Barkley, longtime Alma College trustee and former chairman, left a $1,500 Forest Avenue Church scholarship to Alma and bequeathed his private library to expand the college library. The Barkley Duffield chair, linked to Michigan church leaders, was also willed to Alma and may reside in the Trane It. Barkley served Detroit's Forest Avenue Church for 30 years and supported the college's endowment efforts.

American Legion Auxiliary Reforms After Summer Break

The American Legion Auxiliary resumed activities with a Sept. 14 meeting at Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shook’s home on Republic Avenue. Mrs. P. W. Creaser reported on the State Convention in Ann Arbor. Plans for a heavier winter program were discussed amid urgent anti gas attack concerns. The group anticipates new members and possible leadership changes at the Sept. 28 meeting in City Hall. Divers offered hope for Lusitania treasure via new diving gear.

Young Man Struck by Automobile Saturday Injury Severe

Clarence Humphrey, 21, of Urovy Avenue, was severely injured last Saturday when struck by a bus driven by Mersit F S Hoot on Superior Street between State and Woodworth. He attempted to cross mid block, was hit in the head, and taken to Trainerd Hospital in critical condition as investigation noted driver’s ordinary speed and attempted turn.

Large Barn Burns on Nelson Farm Southeast of St Louis

A large barn on Earl Nelson’s farm about three miles southeast of St Louis was destroyed Friday afternoon with losses near $5,000. The fire’s start is unknown though it began on the south side. flames spread rapidly as 20 to 40 tons of hay and other materials were consumed. Firefighters from Louis fought the blaze but could not save the barn. livestock were moved to safety. Nelson, who bought the farm last spring, carried little insurance and planned to transfer it to himself.

Harding vetoes soldiers bonus bill amid fiscal warning

President Warren G. Harding rejected the soldiers bonus bill in a written message to Congress, warning it would raise taxes and strain government finances. He argued the proposal could undermine public credit, worsen debt obligations, and hinder future defense funding. Senate and House expected to act again before tonight.

Marriage at St Marys Church in Alma and Rosebush couple

On September 20 at 6 15 AM Mary T Duffy of Alma and Bert Littl of Rosebush wed at St Marys church. The bride wore a navy blue canton crepe dress. Bridesmaid Mrs Nina Follett of Muskegon and groom's nephew Bert Little Jr assisted. After a brief honeymoon the couple will reside in Rosebush. The bride formerly worked at the Michigan Masonic Home in Alma. A Sept 1 party honored the bride at the Masonic Home. Advertising notes include wood for sale and cider barrels.

Paving Work 15 to Be Resumed This Week

Paving work on West End Street and Pine Avenue is set to resume within days, with completion expected in four to six weeks depending on material supply. The project aims to widen Pine Street outlet at Superior and improve the Pine–Superior junction, reducing danger at the notorious corner.
