Annual Address Opens Bright Alma College Year

Alma College begins a new term with large enrollment of freshmen and upperclassmen. Freshmen include strong football prospects with heavyweights Mise par East Jordan Johnson Saginaw King Hudson and Anderson Elk Rapids. Citizens welcome the returning students and anticipate the year to be the best in the college’s history.

Six state roads approved for bounty in Saginaw county

State Commissioner of Highways Ely and Deputy Rogers, after inspecting six newly built roads in Saginaw county, approved them for a state bounty of 4282 dollars to the county. Two miles of the state road in Frankenmuth were praised as the best country highway in Michigan.

Mre Abe Minake is working at Henry Huffman's. Floyd Hyatt returned to Mavle Rapids Monday after a few days there. Mrs J A Gardner who had fever in Home better and Gilbert Belcher with wife of Osceola county are visiting town. They came for the death of their grandchild, youngest child of Mr and Mrs Ura Burton, funeral at New Haven Center church Monday afternoon. Mrs RK Wilcox returned that Bathalay evening from five weeks outing at Whitehall near Lake Champlain NY. Mrs Wilcox reports a most enjoyable time. Mrs George Kemiler left Thursday for two weeks visit with relatives in Pauling Town Ohio.

Aroostook County Maine Leads Potatoes Production

A bulletin from the Bureau of Plant Industry details 279 million bushels of U S potatoes produced nationwide last year. Maine yielded 116000 acres at 225 bushels per acre, with most of the crop in Aroostook County at about 275 bushels per acre, or roughly 18 to 20 million bushels. New York led total state production.

Saginaw Business Men Tour Alma on State Visit

Thirty-two Saginaw Wholesale and Manufacturers Association representatives toured Alma on Sept 14 to meet local firms and recruit ties. They traveled in special cars, stayed overnight, and planned future visits to Edmore Vestaburg Riverdale and other towns before continuing to Ithaca Shepherd Mt. Pleasant and more, leaving Alma at 6 30 am.

City schools show strong progress under Prof Ellsworth

Arrested man Dennis Mille in Ashely on assault charge

Dennis Mille of Ashely was arrested Thursday morning by Deputy Ennis for assault and battery after allegedly slapping a young boy. He was brought before Justice Brown, released on bail, and faces further examination Friday. The arrest followed an incident with Marshal Fred Reynolds and may include resisting an officer if the case proceeds.

Pioneer Henry Clifford Dies at 88 in Gratiot County

Henry Clifford aged 88, a Gratiot County pioneer who settled near Seville in 1851, died at his daughter Mrs. Simon Oberlin's home on September 7. Funeral held Thursday conducted by Rev. GH Carl of Alma. burial at Brady Cemetery beside his wife, who died August 6, 1907. He leaves three sons, four daughters, 26 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.

Young Solomon Blackwell Flaunts Speed in Ithaca Ride

Gratiot county paper reports Solomon Blackwell drove Mr. Newman of St. Louis car through Ithaca with a party of girls, racing along Main Street at high speed. Citizens say the trip to St Johns and back was record breaking and dangerous. Solomon pleaded guilty to violating the automobile law and was fined 217.50 plus costs, paid by Mrs. Newman, serving as a caution to speed enthusiasts.
