Convention of three Bull Moose held amid scarce enthusiasm

A Sept. 5 county Bull Moose meeting in Gratiet’s area elected sixteen delegates to the Lansing state convention and formed a county committee. George Irish chaired. George Abbott and Bird Wells aided in nominations. Enthusiasm was low with yawns and red bandanas as rally symbols.

Dudley Tinker Engaged To Miss Mattie McCoy

Miss Mattie McCoy of Walla Walla and Dudley Tinker of San Francisco announce their engagement. The couple were feted at a party honoring Mrs Garhart Steffenson in Renton City amid red hearts and flowers. The wedding is planned for early fall. Tinker recently moved from the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph accounting department to San Francisco.

Cave in breaks man’s leg in ditch collapse at Hastings and State

John Skiver suffered a broken right leg between knee and ankle when a cave in at a four foot ditch on Hastings and State street Friday morning. Heavy clay soil formed rock like chunks. he was moved home to Maple street where Dr. Lamb treated the broken bones.

Alma hosts annual reception for school staff and Board of Education

Last Friday at State street residence Supt and Mrs Pressworth welcomed high school staff and board members and their wives. The gathering renewed acquaintances with teachers soon to join Alma and introduced new faces to the corps. Light refreshments were served and the event reinforced close ties within the city’s school system.

Noe of Bethany Suffers Heavy Loss in Storm

CE Noe, resident of the old Emanuel Oster farm three miles east and two miles south of St Louis, lost six horses one cow two thousand bushels of oats seventy five tons of hay when his barn and granary burned amid a Sunday storm. Estimated damage exceeds six thousand dollars with insurance at seventeen hundred. Noe recently moved from Illinois and faced harsh misfortune.

New Bakery Opens as Dee Day Launches Alma Venture

Dee Day bought the White Bakery from Gloyd White a week ago Wednesday at noon and has since enjoyed a fine trade. Though young, Day is an experienced baker who has worked for Gray & Gray and in several top bake shops before coming to Alma.

St. Louis Leader Sold to Fred Hamlin

The Record notes the first issue under new owner Fred Hamlin who bought the St. Louis Leader two weeks ago from F. M. Vanderkooc and plans new machinery and equipment. John Daugherty of Cadillac and Margaret Stuckey of this city wed Tuesday at the home of Mr and Mrs H B Stuckey on West Superior street. Nearly Electrocution At Alma Grain And Lumber

Carl Smith narrowly escaped a fatal 1100 volt shock while soldering a wire at Alma Grain and Lumber on Prospect street. A safety belt saved him from a fall, yet hot solder burned his leg and damaged both hands and an arm as his body convulsed away from live wires.

Parsons Leaves Ann Arbor RR for Alma Mater Civil Engineering Position

Channing Parsons who has worked in the Ann Arbor railroad’s chgiicering department since his graduation from Michigan Agricultural College last June has accepted an assistant professorship in civil engineering at his Alma Mater. He sent in his resignation about a month ago and it took effect Tuesday. Parsons will spend a few days here before leaving for East Lansing on September 20. He is the son of Mr and Mrs George Parsons of this city and is a 1908 Alma high school graduate. He studied at Alma College and spent three years at M A C, earning a civil engineering degree last June. He made a splendid record at M A C and his personality recommended him to college officers.

Lightning Strikes Blancherd School Demolishes Belfry

Panic is prevented as teachers keep cool when lightning hits the Blancherd Michigan school. One student Frank Driges, 12, burned. others shocked. Audience Disappointed As Prof Goodrich Fails To Arrive

At the Methodist church last Thursday evening the audience was disappointed by the no show of Professor F. S. Goodrich. A derailed car between Lansing and Owosso delayed his connections. telegrams arrived late and the train moved on half way to Alma before the message was delivered. The Bible class planned an ante and arrival by the professor, but plans shifted to an artistically set banquet where Mr Holmes, the president, yielded toasts from several gentlemen. Visitors included Mr GH Carl, Mr J D Spinney, and Prof R Fr Veatch. The class looks forward to similar events in the fall and winter.

Alma public schools confront severe crowding as enrollment reaches about 700 with the high school at 172 to 180 students, rising above six years ago. Officials anticipate hall classes if space does not relieve. a new high school building will end the congestion.

DARRAGH HURT IN ACCIDENT AT PARK HOTEL

Ex congressman A B Darragh suffered a severe foot injury when a heavy marble slab fell in a vacant Gratiot Bank building room last Friday. He is confined to his room at the Park hotel and crutches may be needed temporarily as doctors treat the crushed foot and instep. Mr and Mrs Marty Cohen left Monday for a two week tour of New York visiting major cities.

Miss Laura Kirby and Mr Frank Locker of Detroit were married at Miss Minnie Cheesemans home last Monday afternoon. The ceremony by Dr Jay Clarke had a small gathering. Miss Minnie Cheeseman bridesmaid and Mr Ralph Von Thurtt best man. After the ceremony the couple traveled by south bound train to Detroit to make their home. Mrs Locker known locally as Alma college alumna, while Mr Locker heads the book keeping staff at Detroit Produce Co on Woodward Avenue.

Annual Flower Show at Ward School Building

The Annual Flower and Vegetable Exhibit from the School Gardens will be held next Saturday at three o'clock in the Ward School Building. Children with entries must register between ten and eleven on Saturday morning. Prizes include 1.00 for best Flower Garden, 1.00 for best Vegetable Garden, 2.00 for first prizes, and 1.00 second prizes for both flowers and vegetables. Arcada Grange hosted a leap year party last Friday drawing twenty-five or more couples. Young men served refreshments and displayed dish washing skill as guests enjoyed the evening and anticipated another similar event.
