The tenth annual Alma College opening on a September Wednesday featured full faculty attendance, a scripture reading by Dr. Bruske, prayer by Rev. W. F. Jones, and a Chapel Mixed Quartet led by Voegel Peters Bockner Scott. President Bruske delivered an annal address on cultivating the speaking voice, praising practice and public oration. Mr. W. S. Pierson of Stanton spoke on campus generosity, and a mass meeting by the Athletic Association invited new members for fall football. Mrs. Pierson donated an imported Swiss clock to Alma College Library as a memorial to Dr. Job Pierson, founder of the institution.
The Republican county convention convened at the Ithaca courthouse led by Chairman Martin. F E Stroup of Middletown chaired, committees were named, and nominations began for probate judge, sheriff, county clerk, treasurer, register of deeds, prosecutor, surveyor, coroner, two circuit court commissioners, and a state representative. Balloting favored J M Everden for probate, J H Winton for judge, and A P Lane for clerk among others, with several candidates nominated by acclamation.
Birdsey Bates expected in Alma Saturday. Miss Atta Wilvou to attend Alma Vollee. Tehaca to furnish four students. Forthcoming entrants include Ray Baker and Jno Watson. Louis Brooke to Princeton. Wilbur Nelson restored health and plans to attend. Multiple faculty and student movements detailed with housing, football prep, and social events at Ladies Hall and College chapel.
Nearly all of class six visited the public schools this week. Mr and Mrs J W Smith spent a pleasantry week visiting our public schools. Superintendent Ely spoke at Ithaca Tuesday before the McKinley and Hobart Club. During W E Calver's news Frank Grover attended mathematics classes. Two businessmen Hooper and Lemon also visited the schools this week.
The third weekly meeting was held at the club rooms on Tuesday evening. President absent, Earl G. Torrey presided and J W Holmes led the session in Dr Brooks absence. Secretary Brown read a personal letter from Wim McKinley. The discussion covered financial and tariff matters with members listening to Holmes's candid remarks.
The Rev Dr Brooke will preach at Presbyterian next Sunday morning with evening sermon on The Rarming Power of God. Methodist announces turning sermon Forvent Charity and The Immovable Foundation, with morning church year report and year end service. KASCUPAL offers Holy Communion at 845 am and Sunday school at 1 pm with evening service. A campaign book offer from Francis Palmer is advertised.
