Illinois Picnic a Big Success in Alma

Heavy Friday night rain reduced attendance at the Illinois picnic held Saturday in Alma. About four hundred former Minois residents now in central Michigan attended, despite farms needing attention after the downpour. The event moved to Vaudette hall due to rain, with a basket lunch and speeches by Senator Scully, Dr. Waller, and Mr. Roberts on woman suffrage. Officers were continued: President F Haintine, Vice President Mrs Frank Manley, Secretary-Treasurer John Bateman. The picnic is slated to return to Alma next year.

About ninety percent of auto owners in Alma and nearby areas followed the fuel administration request to refrain from using cars on Sunday to aid gas conservation for France. Slacker Raid by Constabulary Warrants Sheriff Action at Gratton County Fair

The American Protective League, state constabulary and county officers conducted a high profile raid on the Gratton County Fair closing day. Young men aged twenty one to thirty one were checked for proper registration cards. About forty were found without cards and held at the county jail until they could verify registration. Torbensen nine defeated Republic by 4 to 1 in a well played game marked by luck and strong fielding. George Karras, manager at the Paris Cafe, departed Tuesday for Ann Arbor to enlist in the U S service yesterday morning. He is one of three Paris Cafe brothers in service Lewis and William were called previously. County women staffed a Gratiot fair tent distributing literature on woman suffrage and explaining its aims in a calm, effective manner gaining support.

Good Showing by Company 87 at Mt Pleasant Drills
