Alma Civic League Flower and Vegetable Show Saturday

The Civic League of Alma hosts a flower and vegetable show at the Free Reading Room on State Street this Saturday September fourth from seven AM to six PM. Admission is five cents. exhibitors enter free with badges. Judges include Mrs. Timby Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Bittner for flowers and Sartor Mosher Burgland for vegetables.

Fleming Wright wed in Ping River ceremony

Miss Elanor Fleming and Mr Holly Wright of Ping River were united in marriage by Rev J M Wolfe on Sunday evening. Both are highly respected and friends extend congratulations. A reception for the couple will be held at the Wright home later this week.

Band Concert At The Park Delights Local Audience

The Knight of Pythias band gave ten concerts, drawing many citizens to the park. People sat in chairs benches and on the grass beneath the trees and enjoyed the program fully. Afterward the band serenaded Alma Vandette.

Fire at Planing Mill Office Causes Brief Alarm

Clanging fire bell and whistle startled residents last Friday forenoon as a roof fire at the planing mill office was found by W Vliet of the Alma Elevator Co. The fire department arrived swiftly and controlled the blaze with nominal loss after a stream of water was directed through a roof hole. The origin is believed to be a spark from a nearby traction engine passing the building moments earlier.

Instantaneous Fire Extinguisher Demonstrated by Company

A representative from Interstate Chemical Co showcased their Instantaneous Fire Extinguisher last Thursday evening. A tar coated box with kindling and kerosene fire was quickly suppressed by chemical tubes applied at the base, extinguishing the blaze faster than a match could light it. The demonstration, from a salesman’s point of view, was a decided success.

Fifth Annual Encampment at Ithaca Fair Grounds

The Gratiot county battalion of soldiers and sailors holds its fifth annual encampment at Ithaca fair grounds on September 15 to 17. A camp fire at the post room on the 1th and a second at the courthouse on the 7th feature wood, speaking, and music. A. J. Brown and N. Gawdry of Ithaca head the committee and will provide information to interested veterans.

Who is he do you know old man found in ithaca

An eighty year old man wandered Ithaca unable to identify himself. He claimed the name Jonathan Walker and said he has a son named Adelbert but could not state his origin or residence. He was taken to the county house and authorities request information from anyone who recognizes him.

They Play Base Ball: Chicago Broomer Girls to Play Local Nine

Fifty-Five Years in Gratiot County Pioneer Passes Away

Conrad Westenbauer, long-time Gratiot County resident, died at his home on August 22 after moving to Michigan in 1854 with his wife and five children. He lived in Fuller township, leaving eight children, many friends, and daughters Mrs Baker of Alma and Mrs Marrett of Plymouth. His granddaughter Miss Amy Woffner of Grand Rapids survived him.

Death of Hendsill Hart long-time Alma resident recalled

Clinton County records note Hendsill Shephard Hart aged 69 died at his St Johns home after a period of declining health. Born August 6, 1840 in Chautauqua County New York he served in the Civil War and later lived in Alma and Ionia before returning to St Johns. Survived by wife Mary Trefry and four children Mrs E Mattison Frankfort Indiana Holland Hart Norton Vernon Indiana Mrs John Hicks and Mary Hart of St Johns. Funeral held at home with G A R honors and Rev James Prickard officiating. Mrs Hector Travis is a sister.

Overall Factory in the C F Building Proves a Winner

General Manager McCauley relocated the overall factory to the city after a trade deal. Eleven high grade Singer machines and a button machine operate on two floors producing 720 pairs of overalls weekly, with plans to reach 1200 and add cattonade pants and khaki trousers. McCauley aims to double payroll soon as orders grow. The King Bee is sold by Alma merchants with strong dealer and consumer satisfaction.

H J Myers formerly in charge of Alma College commercial department has been offered and accepted the role of commercial instructor at Duluth High School Minnesota. Salary set at 130 dollars per month. Myers and family will relocate soon. wife and children remain in Alma until a home is found in Duluth.

Methodist Parsonage Dedicated at Bannister

The Bannister Methodist parsonage was dedicated last week in a large gathering. Attendees included Dr W P French and Rev Russell Bready with several local pastors. A banquet served by church ladies featured toasts, District Superintendent French acted as toastmaster, and the town celebrates the new building and generous financial support.

Fire destroys barn and contents at North Star center

A barn at Genie Hawkina's form near North Star center burned Wednesday night between nine and ten. The structure held hay oats and farm implements and was fully destroyed. No one was on the property and the cause remains a mystery.
