End Comes to Beloved Man Monday Morning

Professor Joseph W. Ewing died at 4 o clock Monday morning in this city at seventy one from typhoid fever and kidney complications. He served as senior year print pal for Monroe high schools and graduated with honors from college. He and Catherine M. Gregg married before finishing college and later moved to Perrysburg Ohio where he was superintendent of schools for three years, then to Saginaw schools.

Death of Mr Ewing Ends Noble City Service Leader

The city mourns Joseph W. Ewing a trusted educator and college founder born in Randolph Illinois in December 184. He taught school early and led Ionia schools before joining Van Antwerp Brage Co. He headed Alma College after its founding in 1887 and earned respect for his simple life and generosity. His services were held Wednesday at the Presbyterian church with Dr A P Bruske delivering the sermon.

Miss Clara Kittrige died Friday at her brother Bert Kittrige's home in St Louis after traveling from Imlay City two weeks earlier. A stiver attack of thrombosis caused her sudden death. a prayer was held Saturday morning and the family aided by Mr and Mrs Kittrige prepared for the return to Kilay City.

Michigan Insurance Department taxes and revenues noted

The department supervises insurers in Michigan and collects state revenue. For the year ending June 30, 1905 stock life and regular life paid two to three percent taxes on premiums, while casualty and surety firms paid two percent. Mire Mary Ehy widow of General Ralph Ely dies at her home on State street Monday after a seven week illness. In her eighty third year she lived in Alma fifty one years except four in Lanning. Born in Waterloo New York February 1 1849 educated near Chilicothe Ohio. She married Rat Ely and moved through Chariton county then settled in Alma as the town’s first resident. Mother of six children including T A Ely and Mrs Ward. Funeral Thursday at 10 at home conducted by Rev Ramsey. remains laid beside husband in Riverside Cemetery. Out of town attendees included Miss Coats, Miss Florence Coats, and Mrs Geo Royce.

Alma Manufacturing Co Reaches August Production Peak

Alterations are complete at Alma Manufacturing Co with August showing the largest monthly gain. Shipments average one car weekly and now require three to four nights of operation weekly. A car load of McVicker engines was sent to Baltimore Philadelphia Omaha Bradley Illinois and Manitowoc Wisconsin. A new automatic screw machine with six continuous operations accelerates duplicate part production. A new 80 horsepower gas engine under construction will power part of the plant. Building and Loan payments due Tuesday September fifth. Monday is a holiday.

Heat plant contract let for Ithaca court house and jail

County supervisors committee chose J J Bowden and Co Muskegon to supply the heating plant after two weeks of review the bids opened August 9 were too high and costs were cut to 8845 saving the county over 1000. County Clerk Chambers Supervisors O G Tuttle and Henry Reed lead the project aiming for completion by October first.
