Visitors praised Alma merchants and the city’s growth, noting the close ties formed between Alma and Grand Rapids.

Toledo Wholesale Board invites Alma travelers for special train
The Wholesale Merchants and Manufacturers Board of Toledo invites Alma and nearby towns along the Ann Arbor line to visit Toledo. A special train from Frankfort will depart October 27 at six p.m. arriving in Alma around midnight with a sleeper. Return departs Toledo October 28 at 11:30 p.m. for the round trip, berth included. Bethany church dedicates new edifice in Bethany township
The Metho dist Episcopal Society of Bethany township held a two day dedication last Sunday and Monday with elaborate services. Rev Wm H Phelps District Superintendent led Sunday rituals and Rev James B Prickard gave Monday address. Tuesday banquet by Ladies Aid to capacity crowd. Music by Bethany guests Colthorp Giles and Breckenridge orchestra. Dr Wm M Puffer of Grand Rapids also spoke. The new church is described as a monument to progressive Christian faith and to serve a large region.

American tenor Albert Lindquest, hailed as a top Chicago concert artist, will appear in Alma on October 20. Obituary of Morinda M Peterson Mock in Gratiot County
Morinda M. Peterson was born in Canada on July 7 1864 and married Luther C Mock on April 28 1883 in Hamilton township Gratiot County. She died of tuberculosis October 6 1914 at her home in this city after residence there this summer. Survived by husband seven children two sisters and two brothers funeral at North Star cemetery chapel with interment following and a 730 prayer service at home officiated by Rev J W Priest.

FAST STATE BANK Expands With New Lot Purchase In Gratiot County
First State Bank has bought the vacant lot on Wright House Court from Mr. F. E. Blearly between the bank’s present office and Baker’s grocery. The 88 foot front, plus an 11 foot alley and a 6 foot east walk easement, will host a modern banking office. Since 1901, deposits grew from 200000 to sizable figures, with staff increasing to five and equipment upgrades including a burglar proof vault, steel deposit boxes and an electric ledger posting machine. The bank, recognized as a Roll of Honor bank by the American Bankers Association, has maintained a strong dividend and a surplus equal to capital. Officials expect the new building to relieve quarters and serve patrons well.

Four New Residences Rise On East End Street Block
Four homes are under construction within fifteen rods on East End street between Gratiot Avenue and Woodworth. Loyd is building a two story eleven room bungalow with front veranda, Campbell to move into the completed home soon, and a one story bungalow to be sold. A two story cement block house is rising on the Gratiot side, while Will Allen progresses on a two story ten room cement block near Delavan and plans a larger similar house next spring. The project beautifies Alma and fills vacant lots.

Detroit News reports Oct 12 on New Era association seeking constitutional change to dodge Mobile insurance law. Calvin A. Palmer, ex state insurance commissioner, warns it would nullify state supervision, raise fraternal rates, and harm the Michigan insurance business. Masonic Fair a Howling Success in Six Day Run
The Masonic Temple Fair raised about $1500 in receipts over six days with under $300 in expenses. Committee members J. E. Fuller F. C. Parker J. M. Montigel W. H. Miner J. S. Knoertzer and E. L. Smith led efforts. Highlights included fish from Dr. John N. Day, dinners by the Eastern Star adding $115 and a theater program raising $77.25.
