Gratiot County Supervisors elect Democrat chairman
Gratiot County Republican supervisors elected Democrat J. L. Smith of Emerson as chairman after an informal ballot. The vote tally favored Smith over Republicans P. M. Smith Hal Lowrey T. A. Bly. Smith, born 1850 in Scotland, had been Emerson township chair and narrowly lost county treasurer last fall. Committees were named at the October 1909 session.

Presbyterian church annual meeting elects trustees
The Presbyterian church of the city held its annual meeting with a large attendance. Prof F B Elleworth and EA Dean won seats on the board of trustees, and Albert P Cook was named president with Henry A Soule secretary and Francis King treasurer. The church year begins April first and Cook was chosen as delegate to the Synod at Cadillac. Ladies Aid served refreshments as the gathering concluded.

Hotel Noln dry Bar Fire at Ithaca Ignores Rescue Efforts
A fire starting from a defective electric light wire in the loft of Henry Otto’s livery barn at Ithaca destroyed the barn and the adjacent Butler House. Six horses perished and several vehicles burned as flames spread rapidly. Otto’s loss is about 6000 with 600 insurance. Butler’s hotel is insured. The blaze lit the sky and drew many inquiries by telephones.

Four Townships Build Roads in Gratiot County
Townsend A. Ely, state highway commissioner, says during the season of 109 twelve miles of state aid roads were built in Gratiot County. Arcada Pine River Emerson Sumner townships each gained two miles, and North Star Newark Bethany and New Haven each got one mile. State aid is $800 per mile. Ely's tenure notes seventy miles accepted and fifty-seven miles awarded. Kalamazoo County has applied for thirty two miles to be built in 1910.

Local option cases lead to jail terms and fines
Fred Ferguson pled guilty to violating the local option law and was sentenced by Judge Sears to 20 days in the county jail with a 50 dollar fine and 10 dollar costs. W R Horton’s trial was postponed as he pleaded guilty on two charges. first sentence 70 lave in the Detroit house of correction with a 900 dollar fine and 10 costs, second sentence suspended. Albert Mayflower of Alma pled guilty to local option law before Justice M K R Statur and was bound over to the circuit court, later arraigned before Judge Sears and given 20 days in the county jail with a fine of Bb Aneth nate.

A large attendance aided the treasury by 214.00, with the room decorated in vines and fall foliage. Refreshments included pumpkin pies, sandwiches, coffee, cider, and other items, as dining moved to the basement and corridors served social reception.
