Jaxon Honors Congressman Petitioned Senate Bid in 1910

Thousands of Jaxon county voters signed a petition urging Hon. E Townsend to run for United States senator in 1910. Old Landmark Near Otto Sander Hoff’s Hardware Faces Change

The long familiar Schwartz’s foundry building east of Otto Sander hoff’s hardware is being torn down after changing hands from Clint Nelson to Berman Brow. A two story brick or cement garage is planned for Nelson Bros on the 56 by 10 lot with alleys on both sides and rear.

Township Depositories Rule For Township Money

The last legislature allowed county boards to designate official depositories for county funds and required each township to have one or more depositories within the county. Township boards must approve bonds, deposits capped at 100000 per depository, and funds must be publicly accessible. If a bank fails, the township treasurer and bondman are not liable except for expensive deposits.

Court session and sentences handed down by Circuit Court

Monday the Circuit Court convened before Judge Kelly with calendar hearings arraignments and motions. Stephen Taft faced charges for resisting an officer and received ninety days in the Detroit House of Correction while Colin Campbell pleaded guilty to local option violations and was sentenced to thirty days in the county jail plus a ten dollar fee.

Sugar Factory Opening Signals Start of Campaign

Steam will be turned on at the sugar factory today for two to three days of cleanup on last year’s residue. The slicing begins Monday with 400 tons in sheds as the plant enters an 70 plus day run to clean up the season. Early tests show sugar content near the average, with weather conditions expected to boost tonnage and keep growers and factory confident of a satisfactory campaign.

C F Fishbeck owner of the Alma Vaudette employed a crew early in the week to raise the seats making the audience seats eighteen inches higher than the stage. He continually pursues patron interests and the theater now quickly sells out each night of the week.

Alma High Defeats Owosso 32 to 0 In Astrol Game

Alma High triumphed over Owosso High 32 to 0 on Friday afternoon October 1. The home team drew large crowds of students especially girls, with strong backfield play and effective passing. Kress led the offense with several long runs and solid interference as Alma controlled the line and never allowed Owosso to threaten.

The court convened Monday with eighteen criminal cases listed. Seven cases target local option law violations and fourteen chastens on chancery. fifteen divorce cases are recorded. Jurors include Aldrich George S and several St Louis and Arcada residents. A chancery case, Hodge vs City of St Louis, has seen multiple trials and a disputed verdict due to alleged opiate influence.

No Liquor On Ann Arbor Trains

Prosecuting Attorney Mathews of Isabella county received a letter from the general passenger agent of the Ann Arbor dated September. The reply states that on September 1th the sale of beer wine and liquor in passenger cars was discontinued while trains pass through local option counties.

Ed Slussar Lost Arm In Train Accident At Trout Lake Junction

Ed Slussar former publisher of the Manecloya Herald, a well known southern Michigan newspaper man, lost his arm last Saturday after falling under a train at Trout Lake Junction while changing cars with Ex-Congressman William Messick. He had been traveling to North Dakota to investigate land matters. The accident left his arm severed four inches below the elbow. Slussar has many friends in the congressional district who offer sympathy.

Bettie Lawson Pitt Obituary Follows Michigan Life Of Temperance Advocate

Bettie Lawson Pitt, born March 1845 in Northville Wayne County Michigan, married William T butt Macrh 41h then settled in Holly. She joined the Baptist church early and joined the Red Ribbon Temperance Movement, later active in W C T U Gratiot county. The couple moved to Forest Hill then a Seville farm, with two years at Ithace. She attended Center schoolhouse services and helped build a nearby church. She presided over Gratiot county W C T U and stayed busy sorting beach es until illness. She died September 28 after a severe headache, surrounded by mourners at the Center churchyard. She leaves a husband a daughter Mrs Gell Shon six grandchildren three sisters and many friends. Her burial was at the Center churchyard amid flowers and tributes from Sevillé Lemner Farmers club Maccabees of Elwell Gleaner Ald hoelety Center church Aid society and others. The Center school children and neighbors remember her as a devoted wife mother and friend.
