Man Sentenced to Life for Filicide Near Middleton
Alfred Coley aged 45 of New Haven township shot his 11 year old stepdaughter Violet Higoor, then battered her skull with a shotgun in a yard dispute. He was arrested, found guilty in circuit court, and sentenced to life at Marquette. The family had a history of quarrels and Coley’s temper. The funeral was held Sunday for the victim.

Daniel Sellers a former resident of Isabella county Michigan killed himself with a dynamite blast Sunday morning while his family slept. He had suffered from tuberculosis and had been confined at home for weeks. He placed dynamite under himself in the woodshed attached a fuse and waited for the explosion. Both arms were found about eight rods from the house in this solitary, fatal act marking no other major damage to the dwelling.

Pioneer Citizen Silas Moody Dies at Home in Forest Hill
Silas Moody, respected Gratiot County resident and former Michigan legislator, died at home in Forest Hill on November 18, 1916. He settled in Gratiot County in 1861, taught Sunday school nearly thirty years, and served as station agent for the Ann Arbor railroad. Born May 30, in Chatham Ohio, he was a widely active community figure, member of the Congregational church, and father to several children. The obituary notes his enduring public service and deep local ties.
