The thirty second annual banquet of Zeta Sigma Literary Society was hosted in Oddfellows Hall on Saturday November 6. Out of town guests and alumni joined local members for a seven course meal decorated with blue and white streamers and birch bark canoes. An orchestra provided music and a Zeta Sigma quartet performed. Toastmaster Allen Follette introduced speakers including Lee Sharrar on Concentration and Robert Wyatt on Prognostication. Supt. T E Johnson missed the event due to illness. Dean Mitchell spoke on Characterization. The group sang the Zeta Sigma song, then adjourned to the college gym for dancing until midnight.

Howard Willard a well known Alma resident and Michigan Sugar Company field man faced a gun threat Monday from John Miller two miles east of Alma. Miller objected to Willard taking his car and returned with a revolver firing threat to make him leave. Miller was subdued by officers from Alma and Ithaca after they arrived. A search found part of a still and two guns including a revolver and dynamite on Miller’s property.

Ex-Servicemen Scholarships Highlight YMCA Effort
The educational committee of the YMCA with Gratiot county former service men partners the War Work Council to fund free scholarships for veterans. Over 6 million dollars has been allocated to aid veterans in the U.S. and via YMCA programs, including university courses and correspondence study. Alma College already holds a quota and several former service men receive aid, with a total of 1,170 dollars granted so far to four Alma scholars. A roller rink will open in the Ford Garage building on East Superior, operated by J. Food of Petoskey, with plans for nightly skating and a Saturday afternoon session for children.
