Alma residents enjoyed a lively Halloween with surprise parties and games. Ladies in sheets startled Mrs. Suydam with a ghostly porch light prank followed by a pot luck lunch. Don Smith and peers joined a classroom ghost led field day featuring a yard dash and stunts.
The final game of the season at Davis field pits Ama College against Olivet College. A fierce rivalry elevates the match as Olivet, last year’s champions, claim the title while Ama College bets on their confidence. The Saturday showdown promises a fine exhibition of football.
Tuesday and Saturday scenes across Alma show residents including Arch ie McCall of Ithaca and W K Knowlton of Saginaw in town. A Republican rally and a Dodds congressional talk were held at the Opera House this week.
Arcada Grange No. 500 met Saturday evening October 20 with W M presiding. Two candidates received third and fourth degree under the conferring. Edna Kuhlman substituted for lecturer. Opening song from Leaning on the Everlasting Arm. Reecitation-Lall Smith, Recitation-Vivian Kuhlman. Grange adjourned to dining hall for chicken pie supper. Next meeting November 12. Visitors welcome.
J G Lamson inmate at Northern Michigan asylum died after a sheet rope failed during an escape attempt from the second story window. He weighed 180 to 200 pounds and had used a shears, a screwdriver, and soap to remove window screws. Coroner's jury ruled death accidental.
Gratiot county residents organized the Alma Poultry and Pet Stock association last Saturday in Alma. The show runs December 13 to 16 with about a thousand birds expected and aims to boost local farming and business, following a successful Ithaca exhibit. The officers include L L Conn as president and C J Brown as secretary treasurer. The executive committee features Frank Persley, H W Schultz, and others. The event seeks strong merchant support and promises the county’s largest show to date.
The Pere Marquette road ordered a replacement ferry for the ill fated No 18. American Ship Building Co of Chicago is building the vessel to run from Ladington, with similar size and capacity to No 18. The $400,000 hull will have improved features and is slated to enter service early next year. The ship’s number is undecided.
Farmers and others are invited to attend auction sales listed for Friday November 11. Andrew J O Hoyle will auction a large list of personal property starting at 1 PM with Melman as auctioneer. O Hoyle has sold his farm and plans to winter in California and then make Alma his home. On Monday November 14 S Dalrymple will hold a farm sale three miles south and two miles west of Alma. J D Helman acts as auctioneer with J M Montigel as clerk. Dalrymple has rented his farm and offers a substantial personal property list at public sale.
In Gratiot county the Republican party named Charles H. Goggin as prosecuting attorney nominee. A popular young lawyer with a strong docket ahead, Goggin was born in the county, trained at Alma schools and Michigan, now four years' practice, advocating a clean fearless administration. He embodies youth and ambition, urging voters to place the cross before his name.
Local factories Owes Alma and St Lowis operate weighing stations at the Ann Arbor depot this year with managers Chas Reen for Alma, FR Vaniman for Owosso, and John Kenney for St Louis. Alma add new stations at Martha's Siding and Broteys Swamp, plus existing Shepherd and Rosebush oil stations. Owosso opens Rosehued and Shepherd stations. A 22 pound cabbage and a 17 pound one were shown by Arcada supervisor Readient, on exhibit at Economy Shoe Store east window.
The endorsement highlights John Q. Ross for lieutenant governor and Bird for supreme justice, with Frederick C. Martindale for secretary of state, Albert F. Sleeper for state treasurer, B. Fuller for auditor general, O. B. Fuller for land office, and F. H. Dodds as congressman. Ludwig to hold coroner, while Hughes and Long were in town.
W W Ferris longtime Carson City resident and former Montcalm County deputy marshal died at his home on Ely street Alma Wednesday afternoon. Funeral Friday at home with Rev W E Doty officiating. Interment at Perris Center. He was born April 15 1838 in New York and moved via Ohio to Michigan living in Sumner Carson City and Alma. He leaves wife and daughter Elizabeth with many Central Michigan mourners attending.
Avery, long established in the Holliday building, has moved to the Ingersoll building newly occupied by McPhaul Bros. He runs a three chair shop with M. C. Guthrie and Arthur Goolel as staff and invites customers for professional service and courteous treatment at the new Ingersoll block location.
School record for the month ending October 28 showing 18 pupils enrolled 20 days taught and 16.7 average daily attendance. Named students never absent or tardy include Alton Cline Mary Robertson Mabel Bradford Edna Mary Hanford Chrissie Hanford. Tardy but not absent list includes Hugh Taylor Ernest Guthrie Howard Guthrie. Absent no more than one day lists Clarence Stanton Murl Taylor Wayne Elsen. Parents and friends invited to visit.
E. M. L. M. Perrigo of Forest Hill has secured the agency for the E. M. F. automobile in the territory. In the past week he has sold and delivered two of these popular machines and expects to place many more during the coming season.
