The third annual school exhibit drew over seven hundred visitors Friday afternoon in the ward building. Superintendent F Ellewort led guests through the kindergarten area while high school girls offered refreshments. The manual training display, including Roy Perry library table and Willard Thorpe taboret, impressed many as sixth grade boys showed sleds and fifth grade boys sleeves boards.

City rail plans for depot awaiting action and debate
Mayor Montigel received a letter from the Michigan Railroad Commission forwarding Pere Marquette depot alteration plans. They propose enlarging the waiting room to 56 by 19 feet, moving water closets, and converting old closets to a vestibule with separate access for ladies and men. The plans were referred to Aldermen Caple and Cook to consult with the Civic Improvement League, which later rejected the plans as deficient for the city’s needs.

Child struck by Pere Marquette train near Brainerd
Three year old Eva Huggett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Phaggett, was hit by a West Bound Pere Marquette flyer on PMR tracks. She survived after arm amputation and facial injuries at Brainerd Hospital. Eyewitnesses say the whistle and bell may not have been heard and train did not stop.

In Monroe Mississippi four weeks ago last Monday Maude Ferris married Hubert Brainerd at the bride’s parents home. The secrecy failed when Brainerd’s trip to Detroit turned into a secret marriage in Monroe. He returns to Alma and receives many congratulations. Brainerd heads the sales department at Smith and Carr hardware. The couple will soon keep house.

Fifth annual Gratiot County Field Day set for June 1
The Gratiot county Field Day will be held June 1 at Davis Field open to all county schools. Class B now includes schools without the full four years of high school work, increasing competition. Winners in both classes will receive gold medals, with about $50 more spent on medals than last year, plus banners for first honors. The association anticipates this year’s meet will surpass all previous events.

Former Resident L. D. Rodman Dies in Alma
The body of L. D. Rodman, a one time Alma resident who started the first dray line, was buried in Riverside cemetery last Thursday. Survived by Mrs. Rodman and son Tynan Rodman of Cattle Creek, and three brothers, George, William, and Leonard Rodman. Rodman lived in Exton Rapids before his death and served in the city department with the Army. A Grand Army Post funeral service accompanied by local churches followed the burial.

Five Alma youths charged in joy ride theft of automobile
Stanley Langin Alfred Rhodes Ralph Fairchilds Chris Downs and Forest Lanpaugh all of Alma with Riverdale incident last Friday night. They allegedly took I N Sweet’s automobile from his barn drove to Riverdale for a dance then returned and hid the car. Dep Sheriff Arthur Murphy and Justice Chadwick had them arrested and held on bond awaiting examination. The car was damaged and muddy. some claim they were not participants in taking the car.

Decoration Day Display Showcases 1861 Civil War Flag
George Ricketts shoe store window drew attention with a 6 by 10 foot flag made in 1861 by Mrs Alfred of Elkheart Indiana for Company A of the 48th Indiana. The banner, bearing bullet holes from Antietam Shiloh and Shermans march, remains well preserved and prized by the owner. The flag was obtained years ago from color bearer A B Crampton. Miss Lois Fraker, recently teaching in Grand Ledge, will teach in Alma schools replacing Miss Gould who leaves next year.

He and partners formed a committee that gathered a large petition and a $5980 pledge to authorize the project.
