Third Annual Exit Show Covers City School Exhibit

The third annual school exhibit drew over seven hundred visitors Friday afternoon in the ward building. Superintendent F Ellewort led guests through the kindergarten area while high school girls offered refreshments. The manual training display, including Roy Perry library table and Willard Thorpe taboret, impressed many as sixth grade boys showed sleds and fifth grade boys sleeves boards.

City rail plans for depot awaiting action and debate

Mayor Montigel received a letter from the Michigan Railroad Commission forwarding Pere Marquette depot alteration plans. They propose enlarging the waiting room to 56 by 19 feet, moving water closets, and converting old closets to a vestibule with separate access for ladies and men. The plans were referred to Aldermen Caple and Cook to consult with the Civic Improvement League, which later rejected the plans as deficient for the city’s needs.

Popular Attorney Calms Frightened Horse in Street Incident

A horse belonging to John Sullivan bolted from a hitching post, causing two circles across Superior Street before flipping over as onlookers watched. Attorney John M. Danham intervened, guiding and calming the animal after a quick, brave approach. The scene drew attention to the attorney’s steadiness amid a tense moment.

Child struck by Pere Marquette train near Brainerd

Three year old Eva Huggett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Phaggett, was hit by a West Bound Pere Marquette flyer on PMR tracks. She survived after arm amputation and facial injuries at Brainerd Hospital. Eyewitnesses say the whistle and bell may not have been heard and train did not stop.

Owosso Union Telephone to Build Office in Alma

The Owosso Times reports that at a Union Telephone Co meeting in Alma on Monday, a $10,000 appropriation was approved for building an office on company owned lots at the corner of Water and Exchange streets. Plans and specifications will be obtained immediately and bids sought at the earliest date possible.

Married at Monroe surprises Alma friends

In Monroe Mississippi four weeks ago last Monday Maude Ferris married Hubert Brainerd at the bride’s parents home. The secrecy failed when Brainerd’s trip to Detroit turned into a secret marriage in Monroe. He returns to Alma and receives many congratulations. Brainerd heads the sales department at Smith and Carr hardware. The couple will soon keep house.

The seventeenth annual Pine River Sunday School Association gathering met at Parkinson M. I. church last Sunday. Silas Moody spoke on Sunday school work in California, with music by Miss Letta Belle Carmfield and the Coe township male quartette. Alma coach Grady signs Northwestern contract

Grady, widely regarded as Alma’s most successful coach, accepted a three year deal to lead Northwestern University in Evanston starting next fall. The move, abrupt for a small college mentor, follows his two years at Alma and a prior visit to Depaw University before joining present duties. Continued on page.

Fifth annual Gratiot County Field Day set for June 1

The Gratiot county Field Day will be held June 1 at Davis Field open to all county schools. Class B now includes schools without the full four years of high school work, increasing competition. Winners in both classes will receive gold medals, with about $50 more spent on medals than last year, plus banners for first honors. The association anticipates this year’s meet will surpass all previous events.

Former Resident L. D. Rodman Dies in Alma

The body of L. D. Rodman, a one time Alma resident who started the first dray line, was buried in Riverside cemetery last Thursday. Survived by Mrs. Rodman and son Tynan Rodman of Cattle Creek, and three brothers, George, William, and Leonard Rodman. Rodman lived in Exton Rapids before his death and served in the city department with the Army. A Grand Army Post funeral service accompanied by local churches followed the burial.

Five Alma youths charged in joy ride theft of automobile

Stanley Langin Alfred Rhodes Ralph Fairchilds Chris Downs and Forest Lanpaugh all of Alma with Riverdale incident last Friday night. They allegedly took I N Sweet’s automobile from his barn drove to Riverdale for a dance then returned and hid the car. Dep Sheriff Arthur Murphy and Justice Chadwick had them arrested and held on bond awaiting examination. The car was damaged and muddy. some claim they were not participants in taking the car.

Decoration Day Display Showcases 1861 Civil War Flag

George Ricketts shoe store window drew attention with a 6 by 10 foot flag made in 1861 by Mrs Alfred of Elkheart Indiana for Company A of the 48th Indiana. The banner, bearing bullet holes from Antietam Shiloh and Shermans march, remains well preserved and prized by the owner. The flag was obtained years ago from color bearer A B Crampton. Miss Lois Fraker, recently teaching in Grand Ledge, will teach in Alma schools replacing Miss Gould who leaves next year.

Bustling Sumner Puts Up For Road Money

James Corbett of Sumner township a believer in good roads drives a movement to fund a mile of gravel road between sections 9 and 10. He and partners formed a committee that gathered a large petition and a $5980 pledge to authorize the project. The plan aims to connect Alma to the Tomlin residence, creating a continuous gravel route once finished.

Sunday School Notes From Alma and Ithaca Churches

Mr Henry Soule was elected superintendent and Mr McConkey assistant at Alma Presbyterian Sunday school. Loyal Bereans held a successful entertainment despite bad weather. St Louis Presbyterian Sunday school reports a strong year with attendance up one fourth in a year and one half in two years. Mrs Seaver's class served the Normal Reunion banquet. Garden Club Luncheon Delights Detroit Visitors

Garden Club of Michigan members gathered for a luncheon hosted by Mrs. Francis King. After the meal they toured the garden to admire blooming Darwin tulips.
