Alma Home and Improvement Co Incorporation Planned

Alma citizens heard a report urging the formation of an integrated building firm to expand housing. A committee, led by James A. Greene, recommended a $50 000 stock company with $10 shares and launched a subscription raising over $5000. Coal gas production begins in Alma plant

The coal gas works under construction for months began producing gas last week after heating ovens for 30 days. On Monday H C Moore fired the first coal into the oven in the presence of business leaders, yielding Alma’s first coal gas. On Wednesday A G Leitch delivered the first coke downtown. the plant is operating well with Leitch supervising the setup and initial hiccups now resolved.

Death of James Tr Ward Hall in Chicago

James Tr Ward Hall of Chicago died recently after a life rooted in the county. A former resident, he helped form Pierce Ward Hall and built Alma’s first new mill in 1868 at the site later occupied by Home Lumber & Fuel. He and Mr Ward laid out the Elwellmore area in the north part of town. Highly regarded by peers, his passing was noted as he was buried in Watertown, New York, on Thursday.

Golden Wedding Honors Elliott Parents at West Superior

President and Mrs Crooke hosted a reception last Wednesday for Dr and Mrs J C Elliott as they marked their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Out of town guest Mrs Paul Hickock of Washington DC attended. A second six o'clock reception honored the couple with friends and college faculty.

Burnt by acid and liniment claims in family case

A Michigan mother allegedly wed to a man 68 years old with a liniment named Hanford's Balsam of Myrrh. The article notes another Carthund resident, A. M. Millard, who was nearly burned by sulphuric acid and credited the liniment with curing him and removing scars.

Play to a Capacity House in New England Themed Drama

A capacity audience filled the opera house Friday night for On the Old County Pike. Bruce Chesterman directed and wrote the play. A G Leitch led as Dr Martin with strong supporting turns by Lyle McKenzie Joe McKenzie Ruth Bennett and others. The Ladies Guild of St Johns Episcopal church sponsored the production, which packed the house and raised a neat sum for their work.

Mt Pleasant Hosts Isabella Clare Society Meeting

The Isabella Clare Society gathered in Mt Pleasant on May 24 with forty members and wives attending a noon gathering at Dr. B E Gardiner’s home followed by a banquet at Hotel Bennett. Ladies attended a May festival at the normal school while doctors heard papers by Brandstetter and Pullen with discussions. Next month the group travels to Detroit for the American Medical Association meeting.

To Build Garage With Modern Paint Shop Planned

Last week Wim Burton of Alma Garage Company became owner of the lot two doors east of his present location. The purchase was made from C. M. Johnson. Mr Borton has let contract to Henry Seale for a building 50 by 10 feet two stories high to be erected of brick or tile. The new garage will be the most fully equipped in the city and include a large paint shop. Ground will be broken soon.

Community Club Sees Rapid Growth in New York

The Community Club, born from a mothers and daughters banquet, reports rising membership and active classes under skilled instructors. Meetings are at the high school on Tuesdays at 7 30 p.m. Officers include President Miss Rose Messinger and several vice presidents, with Miss Grace Haner as secretary. Public School Exhibit Friday Afternoon in City

The public schools invite the community to the annual exhibit at all school buildings on Friday afternoon May 26. The high school gym will display student work while each grade room hosts its own exhibit. Last year about 1000 people attended and this year expectations rise. Light refreshments will be served at each building.

Alma College Choral Union stages Martha at opera house

The Fourth Annual May Festival concert directed by Prof. Reene Farrington Veatch drew a fair audience at the Alma College opera house. The production of Martha by Von Flotow impressed with strong acting and singing, under Miss Camelia Waite and pianist Mixx Grace Roberts, aided by a five-piece orchestra. Rosalie Netzorg led as Lady Harriet with a fine soprano. Pauline Markham and the male principals G. Vernon Wright Oscar Anderson were well received. Chester R. Robinson and Carl Street delivered notable performances. Overall the ensemble blended well and the show pleased despite not reaching capacity. Mrs. F L A Gill plans a Perry visit over Sunday.
