Coal gas production begins in Alma plant

On Monday H C Moore fired the first coal into the oven in the presence of business leaders, yielding Alma’s first coal gas. On Wednesday A G Leitch delivered the first coke downtown. the plant is operating well with Leitch supervising the setup and initial hiccups now resolved.

Death of James Tr Ward Hall in Chicago
James Tr Ward Hall of Chicago died recently after a life rooted in the county. A former resident, he helped form Pierce Ward Hall and built Alma’s first new mill in 1868 at the site later occupied by Home Lumber & Fuel. To Build Garage With Modern Paint Shop Planned
Last week Wim Burton of Alma Garage Company became owner of the lot two doors east of his present location. The purchase was made from C. M. Johnson. Mr Borton has let contract to Henry Seale for a building 50 by 10 feet two stories high to be erected of brick or tile. The new garage will be the most fully equipped in the city and include a large paint shop. Ground will be broken soon.

Alma College Choral Union stages Martha at opera house
The Fourth Annual May Festival concert directed by Prof. Reene Farrington Veatch drew a fair audience at the Alma College opera house. The production of Martha by Von Flotow impressed with strong acting and singing, under Miss Camelia Waite and pianist Mixx Grace Roberts, aided by a five-piece orchestra. Rosalie Netzorg led as Lady Harriet with a fine soprano. Pauline Markham and the male principals G. Vernon Wright Oscar Anderson were well received. Chester R. Robinson and Carl Street delivered notable performances. Overall the ensemble blended well and the show pleased despite not reaching capacity. Mrs. F L A Gill plans a Perry visit over Sunday.
