Early Alma Pioneers Chronicle William Howe’s Life

William Howe of Cleveland came to Alma in February 1865 to clerk for Gargett & Gee. Unmarried, he boarded with Flavius Ely, then married, and later acquired 50 acres of state land south of town. He lived there until 1860, then moved to New York, returning in 1866. He recounts early town growth, the hotel and store by Gargett & Hilbert, a Pine River dam built in 1807, and early court sessions with juror William Rogers. He describes two marriages in the community and ceremonies held at D Ely’s residence.
