City Council opens paving bids for Superior and State streets

Wednesday the city welcomed twenty five or more paving contractors and specialty men at the Wright House as Alderman A P Conk read bids for curb gutter and pavement. Firms from Saginaw Detroit Grand Rapids and more submitted prices. two hours later Engineer Sherman asked for time to extend footings and compile bids with work hoped to start by June first.

College Happenings At Alma Debates And Lectures

Debates at Alma College feature topics on federal income tax legality with teams led by Edw Thompson and W Wilcox, plus a third contest at Mo A C Ypsilanti. Prof Deschamps of Paris will lecture on character theory at the M E church. Wild flower show draws modest crowd at city hall

Civic League Garden Committee hosted a Saturday wild flower show in Alma's city hall kindergarten room with 40 exhibits despite heavy rain. Prizes went to Thelma Ltusay Charles Creaser and Margaret Brese for variety naming and arrangement, with several honorable mentions for beauty. Upcoming Alma high school sports schedule noted includes May 18 in Mt Pleasant and May 18 track at St Louis.

Burial Train Brought Ammi W Wright Home From Michigan

The funeral party for Ammi W Wright traveled by special car from Detroit to Montreal then to Chester Vermont where burial rites were held at the Chester Episcopal Church. Rev Barnard conducted services as old friends served as pallbearers. The party met by Dr J A Lancashire and daughter and received courteous attention from Grand Trunk Railway staff during the journey.

Fatal shotgun accident ends party visit in Forest Hill

During a Saturday eve gathering at the home of Mr and Mrs Pettit in Forest Hill, Marion Wigler was fatally wounded by an accidental shotgun discharge. Mr Bigler and guests were present when the rifle misfired, striking Wigler on the face and neck. Dr Lamb treated eleven wounds, clothing likely saved Bigler from more severe harm.

Arcada Hotel furniture sold at public auction Saturday

The Arcada Hotel furniture and furnishings will be sold at public auction next Saturday morning on the hotel premises. Thos Mays closed the hotel last week due to financial losses after mortgaging the property to Joseph Cohen. D Hellman will be the auctioneer. Andrew Shaw buys next door home on Superior Avenue and will overhaul it with carpenters and a new roof. Willard Carlyle Barnhart plans to live with Cadillac hosts and join the Independent Cash Grocery clerking team.

Arcada Hotel to reopen under European plan in Alma

Proprietor George W. Palfrey plans a June reopening of the Arcada Hotel in Alma after extensive refurnishing and redecorating. The European plan will replace the American format with a noon meal, self-serve breakfast and supper, and new entrances and stair access. summer installations include steam heating and refreshed bed chambers. Palfrey, a veteran hotelman in Gratiot County, expects the property to attract guests with updated facilities and service.

Fraternal Night For Ithaca Alta Lodges In St Louis

The F. and A. M. lodges of Ithaca and Alta were entertained by the St. Louis lodge in its rooms. Fifty from Alma and forty from Ithaca joined about one hundred fifty attendees for cards, a smoker, and a banquet. Toasts led by George Aldrich included remarks by Ezra Smith and D. L. Johnson with a program of quartets, solos, and tributes to fraternity and the legal profession.
