Alma urged to expand depot facilities by July 1 1912

Michigan Railroad Commission orders Alma to add union station facilities for Pere Marquette and Ann Arbor railroads. Plans due by May 10 1912 and construction to start by July 1 1912 after commission approval. Public bids invited for pavement work on Superior Street to Mill and State streets with 10 percent bid bonds.

Michigan Masonic Board Arrives in Alma for Sessions

The Michigan Masonic Board arrived in Alma yesterday and scheduled two sessions today. H J Bush of Mt. Pleasant served as a business cutter for the city last week.

Death of Mrs Medler in Alma Community

Mrs Melvin A Medler died at the Medler home on Wark avenue after illness since last June. She was a longtime Alma resident, a Rebecca Lodge and Pythian Sisters member, and worked twenty years for F Pollasky. She was born Io Coleman in Grafton Ohio on March 14 1870, lived in Michigan then Alma, married March 4 1905 to M A Medler, survived by husband mother and three brothers. Funeral held Saturday at the Medler home with Pythian Sisters and Rebeccas in attendance. burial Riverside Cemetery.

Gratiot Democrats elect delegates for Bay City convention

In Ithaca a Gratiot county mass convention selected sixteen delegates to the May 15 Bay City Democrat State Convention and instructed them to back Woodrow Wilson. The vote broke the regular county machine 27 to 5 in favor of Wilson, with Archie McCall and Dewitt Vought leading the pro Wilson faction. Principal speaker Woodbridge Ferris lauded Lincoln and Wilson.

Two hundred Odd Fellows train to North Star anniversary

About two hundred Odd Fellows and Daughters of Rebecca traveled by special train from Alma to North Star for the ninety third anniversary of Odd Fellowship in North America. The day included a business meeting with officers elected, a luncheon, a parade led by the Pompeii band, lodge demonstrations, a public address by H. A. Thompson, and a return by train.

Alma special session considers bond issue purchase

Alma Michigan held a special city council meeting April 27 1912 with a quorum present to discuss buying the 30000 street improvement bonds issued by voters January 23 1912. Spitzer Rorick Company Toledo submitted a proposal for 21000 to purchase the bonds payable in Toledo Ohio with two certificates of deposit as part of the arrangement.

Anti-Saloon League to speak at Baptist and Presbyterian churches

State Anti Saloon League representatives will present the organization’s work from Baptist and Presbyterian pulpits next Sunday. Pliny Marsh will speak at the Baptist church in the morning and Rev. G W Morrow will address the evening Union service at the Presbyterian church. The public is invited to all services.

Annual Officers Day Program of Women's Club

The Women’s Club held its annual officers day event at Mrs. J W Robinson’s home with retiring officers presiding. A four course breakfast followed, toastmistress duties by Mrs. Robinson and a roll call of author quotes. New officers named Sadie Messinger president and others in roles for the year. Memorial tablet honor for Ammi W Wright at Masonic Home

Paying bids for city paving discussed in St Johns

The St Johns city council opened bids for paving work on a Monday evening. City Engineer E G Hulse completed tabulation of bids after visits by a special paving committee appointed by Mayor Montige. The council met in a special session to consider the bids and report findings.

Alfalfa Club Meets in Alma With Potts Visit

Michigan Agricultural College field agent A R Potts will be in Alma Wednesday May 8 at 7 30 p m meeting the Alfalfa Club at City Hall and advising members on seeding as bacteria are ready for distribution. Last week County School Commissioner Potter handled 93 teaching certificate applicants with 40 percent men and 60 percent women seeking first to third grade certificates amid rising salaries.

Stumps Blown From Ground Demonstration At Farm

A display by T X Allyn of Saginaw, Michigan for the Aetna Powder Company showed stump and root blowing using dynamite at Walter Caples farm southeast of the city. Demonstrations covered stump removal, root expulsion, drainage blasting in Everglades drainage, tree planting uses, and soil loosening to aid root spread and fruit production. Allyn, with seventeen years in the business, explained costs and benefits and recent uses in the region including Dr. Morgans' fruit farm near Saginaw where about 100 trees were set out by this method last week.

Annual meeting of the Presby terian church held last Thursday

The annual meeting in the Presbyterian church parlors April 6th heard financial reports showing a satisfactory condition. Two trustees, E H W. Deane and F T Ellsworth, were re-elected. A motion to secure a pastor as soon as possible was approved, with the pulpit supplied each Sunday in the interim. A postal card offers free magazine samples from Today's Magazine, Canton Ohio.
