Alma to Host Father and Son Banquet Friday

Alma prepares a large Father and Son Banquet at Wright Hall with Hi Y volunteers, tickets at 1.20 for two, doors at 6 30. Rev Green of Mt Pleasant will give the address, Frank Smith to conduct song service, and Misa Lois Smith plus Rh Laechert assist musically. The event aims to be memorable for Alma in 1922.

Summer School Work at M A C East Lansing

East Lansing March 24 Special work for teachers of agriculture and rural school instructors outlines the Michigan Agricultural College summer session running June 26 to Aug 4. Regular undergraduate courses plus adapted material in agriculture home economics applied science and engineering expand the curriculum. A model one room school will be kept for demonstration with rural teachers. Hugh Tedhame becomes Hupmobile agent in the area with a display room in the Bennett building on East Superior Street.

State Oat Crop Needs Fertilizers

Dr M M Metool head of the Michigan Agricultural College soil department notes Michigan's oat crop of about 1.5 million acres needs fertilization this spring. Tests show acidic phosphate boosts yields on loam silt and clay soils, with 150 to 250 pounds per acre for two years. Heavy soils low in humus may use 150 to 250 pounds of 2-12-0, light soils 200 to 250 pounds of 2-12-2, and hay oats may require nitrogen top dressing 60 to 100 pounds per acre.

A Fine Concert on Lyceum Course April 1

Woodworth Ave Pavement Bids Set For April 4

City plans paving two blocks of Woodworth avenue from Superior street to the railroad crossing with a 30 foot section and a narrowing to the rail line. Bids open April 4. work could start before May 1 if awarded. Other spring paving decisions depend on tax payers and bids, with low figures expected this year. Moore to Speak Twice in Alma on March 24

Dr Willie A Moore of Mishawaka Indiana will speak in Alma on Wednesday March 24 in two sessions. At noon he speaks at the Chamber of Commerce community building. At 8 pm he delivers a talk at East Superior Street Christian Church on The Golden Hale in Business. Free tickets for the church address are available at the drug store or the church next Sunday.

Eastern Time Is Sought Here in City Petitions Circulated

Petitions are circulating in stores seeking to move clocks forward to Eastern Time this summer. They will be sent to the city commission, which can approve the one hour shift for daylight, and the effort appears broadly favored. An advertisement for Tanlac appears with Look Pater con Drug Co.

New Cleaning Establishment Opens in Alma

The Star Dyers and Cleaners, owned by W A Lovejoy and W Noyes, arrives from Hilldale to Alma and opens Tuesday in the Spinney block on East Superior Street with a formal morning and afternoon ceremony. The firm plans sten operations in St Louis and Ithaca and brings presses, washers, and a gasoline refinery to Alma. Sealed bids are invited for moving South Woodworth Avenue with five percent certified checks due April fourth. the city may reject all bids.

Pikers to Circle Lake Michigan on July Tour

The Michigan Pikes Association will circle Lake Michigan in July, totaling 1720 miles over 19 days from Detroit July 7 to Detroit July 20. The route includes Detroit Chicago Milwaukee Muskegon Grand Rapids and Petoskey with 77 good roads meetings along the way. The West Michigan Pikes plan a July 14 16 run from Chicago to Petoskey and an on return to Grand Rapids.

St. Louis Sunday blaze destroys Pere Marquette depot

Fire swept the Pere Marquette passenger station in St. Louis early Sunday, leaving only the east end standing. Flames raged from about 2:00 a.m. until after 5:00 a.m. as high winds hindered control and water pressure proved inadequate. A coach was moved onto the site to serve as a temporary station, with a new building expected to replace the wrecked depot in due time. Alma residents quipped they wished the fire had burned nearby instead.

Chlorine not responsible for corrosive water claims

In a letter to city manager William E. Reynolds Wallace & Tiernan Co. of Newark argues that chlorine used for water sterilization does not make water corrosive. They note about four billion gallons daily treated with chlorine in major cities and cite boiler horsepower as evidence of noncorrosive water. The letter adds that free chlorine would likely be found absent in town water analyses.

College Plans Topic At G. of C. Luncheon

Alma Chamber of Commerce luncheon drew a large crowd with Alma College speakers and messages supporting Alma Bread flour and the Roller Mill. Highlights included endowment totals, gymnasium plans, and expansion for Alma College toward 1925 26, plus a Republican bid for County Drain Commissioner announced by a local candidate.
