St. Louis Sunday blaze destroys Pere Marquette depot
Fire swept the Pere Marquette passenger station in St. Louis early Sunday, leaving only the east end standing. Flames raged from about 2:00 a.m. until after 5:00 a.m. as high winds hindered control and water pressure proved inadequate. A coach was moved onto the site to serve as a temporary station, with a new building expected to replace the wrecked depot in due time. Alma residents quipped they wished the fire had burned nearby instead.

Chlorine not responsible for corrosive water claims
In a letter to city manager William E. Reynolds Wallace & Tiernan Co. of Newark argues that chlorine used for water sterilization does not make water corrosive. They note about four billion gallons daily treated with chlorine in major cities and cite boiler horsepower as evidence of noncorrosive water. The letter adds that free chlorine would likely be found absent in town water analyses.
