First Ms and Daughters Banquet held in city

The high school gym hosted 565 attendees for the first Ms and Daughters Banquet. Mothers and daughters enjoyed a menu centered on chicken and homestyle dishes, with speeches by Francis King and Mrs. J. W. Priest, a Girl Glee Club performance, and a concluding song. A Victrola Store donation supplied music.

Civic Improvement League to canvass wards with sprinkling Wips

The Civic Improvement League announces canvassing by its solicitors led by Bert Hicks to promote street sprinkling. It notes funds from sprinkling are kept separate, totaling 99226 in certificates of deposit, to be used only for a future Alma project decided by the executive committee. The fund has no connection with President Mrs Prancie King.

Tragic Fire Claims Four Schmidt Children in Saginaw

Four Schmidt children from Saginaw died in a fire last Friday at their home. The bodies were found among the remains of a burned residence after the mother briefly left to run errands. The fire’s cause is not yet determined as investigators search for clues.

Death of Alma Resident Fred Elwood at Fifty

Fred Elwood, aged about fifty, died last Thursday morning from a stroke. He had lived in Alma for years and had no close relatives in the area. Funeral services were held Saturday morning and his body laid in the vault temporarily. The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Church held a fund-raising supper Friday evening at 6:30 in the church parlors, with an excellent menu and several short speeches supporting department heads and auxiliary societies.

A mysterious cloaked woman roams the north State Street area at night creating unease among residents. She is seen darting between doorways, visiting stores for food, and may be staying in a remote part of the city. No one reports direct harm, but residents watch her rapid wandering with concern.

Cadillac Photographer to Locate in This City

F C Welsh a Cadillac photographer will open a studio over Wright's furniture store in the city about April 1. He recently sold his half interest to his brother after fourteen years in business. The outfit is new and represents the latest in photography gear including a complete home portrait outfit. Welsh moved his family to the Hooper house on Elwell street last Tuesday. The sixth annual horse show will be held in St Louis on Wednesday March 29. The committee aims to attract farmers and breeders for stock exhibitions with free dinner and horse feed. A special prize will be awarded for the oldest horse. a parade led by Yerington’s band starts at one o'clock. A tug of war between the north and south teams is planned with several listed participants.

The young peoples dancing club of the Gs held a lively evening at Reese Hall with about thirty couples. Frappes and lemonade were served, dancing continued until a late hour, and attendees reported a very enjoyable time.

Married at Madison and Alma schools catalogue

Mr and Mrs A F Cook and Ming Helen traveled to Madison Wisconsin for son Maynard wedding to Miss Choral Boyd of Madison. Ruth will join on Thursday. The wedding occurs Thursday evening at the bride’s parents and the couple will live in Chicago. Alma Public Schools issued a handsome 75 page catalogue printed by the Record Office with eight full page illustrations detailing the course of study in public and high schools.

Union Temperance Meet at Presbyterian Church

A union temperance meeting of city churches was held last Sunday at the Presbyterian church. Rev Mason presided and Rev. Ault read scripture. Prof Davies from Alma College spoke on Why to thy College Against the Salons. Prof Schultz addressed alcohol and narcotics in public schools. Attorney Greene concluded with The Legal Status of the Liquor Question in this State. The gathering closed with America’s song.

Final Declamation And Oratorical Contests At High School

Last week on Tuesday and Friday evenings the final contests of the Declamation and Oratorical Series were held with pupils from eighth to twelfth grades. Francis Priest won the Declamation, Frank Notestein second, Mike Coleman third. Helen Mason won the Oratorical Contest, Howard Handley second, Hazel Shankel third. The winner will represent the high school in the sub district contest. Special credit goes to the English teachers for the success. Also note a meeting of the Central Michigan Shorthorn Association in Alma on March 30 at 10 am and 2 pm with speakers from Chicago and M A C and other points. Topics include improvement of herd, beef and milk, cooperative marketing of livestock, and getting the most money from the earth. March 30 is the date. For information write C. W. Walnut seedling orders soar as Alma school leads

Central State Normal at Mt. Pleasant Michigan will ship a large batch of black walnut seedlings this spring. Orders total in the thousands with a top single order from the Union School of Alma for 127 Concord Grapes and BR walnut seedlings. Seedlings, grown at Michigan Agricultural College, are one to two years old and mailed by parcel post at two cents each with no orders under twelve.

Glee Club Tour Opens With Ithaca Concert Tonight

The college Glee Club began its annual ten day tour with a Thursday evening show in Ithaca and will return to Alma Friday morning to begin a two night engagement in Belding. A final performance is set for Friday in this city on April 7 under Prof. Veatch. The group is praised as the best ever sent out by the college with all members in fine voice.

Fordney Sails At Dems In Speech Before House

Fordney assailed the Democratic administration in a House speech criticizing policy shifts on canal tolls, Mexican policy, preparedness, war loans, automobile taxes, and trusts. Found Frozen in Straw Inmate Fred Williams Found Dead

The body of Fred Williams of St Johns was found frozen in a straw stack on a farm west of Lake Odessa on Wednesday. Williams, an inmate of the State Hospital at Kalamazoo, was allowed to work outdoors and escaped from the hospital on February 17. It is believed he crawled into the straw stack to die.

Ollie Worden Sentenced to Ninety Days in County Jail

Ollie Worden, a longtime troublemaker in Alma, received 90 days in the county jail at Ithaca on Thursday. Judge Searls warned that a longer term could follow if he appears again before him. Invalids at the Masonic Home were moved to the new hospital on Thursday marking a milestone in state care. The modern quarters credit Montigue as manager and promise improved services.
