Final Declamation And Oratorical Contests At High School
Last week on Tuesday and Friday evenings the final contests of the Declamation and Oratorical Series were held with pupils from eighth to twelfth grades. Francis Priest won the Declamation, Frank Notestein second, Mike Coleman third. Helen Mason won the Oratorical Contest, Howard Handley second, Hazel Shankel third. The winner will represent the high school in the sub district contest. Special credit goes to the English teachers for the success. Also note a meeting of the Central Michigan Shorthorn Association in Alma on March 30 at 10 am and 2 pm with speakers from Chicago and M A C and other points. Walnut seedling orders soar as Alma school leads
Central State Normal at Mt. Pleasant Michigan will ship a large batch of black walnut seedlings this spring. Orders total in the thousands with a top single order from the Union School of Alma for 127 Concord Grapes and BR walnut seedlings. Seedlings, grown at Michigan Agricultural College, are one to two years old and mailed by parcel post at two cents each with no orders under twelve.

Found Frozen in Straw Inmate Fred Williams Found Dead
The body of Fred Williams of St Johns was found frozen in a straw stack on a farm west of Lake Odessa on Wednesday. Williams, an inmate of the State Hospital at Kalamazoo, was allowed to work outdoors and escaped from the hospital on February 17. It is believed he crawled into the straw stack to die.
