The Alma Sugar Company engaged Fred B Hathaway of Grand Rapids as manager of the Alma sugar factory. Hathaway resigns as Grand Rapids public schools superintendent to take the new post, receiving a salary above 1000 dollars. His two years in Grand Rapids included reorganizing the school system and expanding programs, with plans for further district-wide improvements.
