Gratiot County Gas Co Elects Officers and Plans Plant
The Gratiot County Gas Company formed its board of directors led by C F Brown as President and GM with Francis King as Vice President and R B Wagner as Secretary. J P Cusling joins the board. They will build a 48 by 90 foot brick high pressure gas plant at Elm and East Superior to serve Alma St Louis and Ithaca, with American Gas Construction Co supervising installation and a 30 day operation trial. Three crews of eighty men will begin work to deliver gas by July 1. The route passes 65 farm residences along Grover Ave to Ithaca, ensuring gas access for residents along the line.

William Cooper Civil War veteran passes away in Alma
William Cooper born August 12 1849 in Richmond Virginia died March 8 1914 at his home corner Hastings and Woodworth. He married Emma Prince May 31 1880 and had seven children. A private in the 5th United States Colored Infantry he served under Sheridan and Mead and was wounded sabre cut on the right arm. He lived in Ohio and Alma for 27 years before burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Miss Irene Boise Teaches Rebekah Degree in Alma
Miss Irene Boise, Assembly president of the Daughters of Rebekah, arrived in Alma last Friday. She conducted instruction in the Rebekah Degree for Alma Branch members. A banquet followed, enjoyed by over 100 attendees with guests from Elwell and St. Louis. Boise stayed as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Foster.

Alma sent representatives to the State Oratorical Contests in Albion last Friday. In the women’s contest Olivet College won first, Hope College second, Kalama Zoo third. In the men’s, Grant Cook earned third place, with Alma’s team taking first and Hope second. A spirited crowd of rooters attended a reception before the event. next year’s contest will be in Alma.
