A devastating blaze at a school in Gollimood left nearly two hundred students dead and others injured. Rescue teams battled flames as authorities launched an investigation into the cause and safety lapses. local officials pledged support for survivors and families.
Alma Board of Education orders four fire extinguishers and new drills following the Collinwood school fire that claimed 165 children. A city office probe found unlocked exterior exits and doors barred from inside at central building, prompting safety actions by the school board and Fire Chief Pishbeck.
A Lansing telephone message to The Record reports efforts to adopt primary methods for selecting the Republican State Senator candidate in Isabella Mecosta and Gratiot counties. Petition totals fell short of the 1701 required signatures. Isabella had 1028, Mecosta 10582, Gratiot 100 with only 14 of 40 accepted. Insufficient signers end attempts at primary reform and the district will keep the old convention system.

The sawmill of George English in Pompei exploded Monday morning near nine o clock. Five men were in the mill at the time and all escaped serious injury. One worker was hurt but not seriously. Engineer Charley Pearson blamed foaming water in the boiler for the blast, noting the boiler had water but gas formed from foam may have caused the explosion. The mill, built eighteen years ago, had only operated a few weeks each winter in recent years and was running about a few weeks at this time.
In probate court decisions, Daniel Ridenour’s estate claims were allowed and closed to creditors. Special and general admin petitions were filed for Alma Fiske. Lewis C. Fiske named special administrator. Oscar Wilson appointed guardian of Lefa Wilson, minor. Mrs Denab H Crandall named guardian of Geraldine Burkman, minor. Kel log appointed administrator of Charles A Scramlin’s estate. Petitions filed for Fred Quidor’s administrator. hearing set for April 6. Determination of heirs in Mary Medler’s estate scheduled for April 4.
J M Wolfe of the First ME church leads a men’s clinic meeting after Sunday church hours. The forty-member class held a Friday evening gathering in the church parlors with a women-served magenta theme. Rev F M Wolfe acted as toastmaster and speaker J G Kress discussed The Lawyer as applied to Man and the Bible. An all-male quartet sang and toasts were given by Ezra Smith and others. The event closed near midnight.
John Danham who represented Alma at the Hope college oratorical contest is described as a professional preacher by Prof. Nykirk, while others dispute the label. The board tabled a protest as Albion and Olivet winners reportedly preached longer, sparking student mockery and questions about fairness and eligibility.

Mary Ryckman born July 28 1819 in Elgin County Ontario died at home in Sumner township on February 29 1808 aged 68 years and a month She married John Medler Oct 9 1854 They had one child Bins They moved to Sam pet township Michigan in 1664 where they faced hardship Mr Medler was buried A longtime member of the Divive church Aunt Mary was beloved for kindness Her survivors include a daughter Mrs C E Sling lef a grandson and a great granddaughter two brothers and two sisters and many friends The funeral was from the Elwell church conducted by Rev Hosing of St Louis The obituary closes with a reflective verse on rest and faith.
Mrs Margaret Wagner native of Hamilton county Pennsylvania born 1897 died Saturday afternoon at one o clock after wintering with her daughter Mrs J R Walters of St Louis Burial will be in Noblesville with son and daughter accompanying the remains Seven children six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren survive her Community remembers her for many virtues and kindness
Rev O W Waldron opened the march meeting at Emerson Center parlor of the Baptist church in Ithaca reporting a good meeting though attendance was light due to another nearby event. Rev J A Busing of Disciples Church of Our Souls spoke Wednesday night March 3 at Evangelical Church in Bethany Township with good voter representation and discussion.
John Landengayer slipped on ice and injured his ankle. He bought Rexall Rubbing Oil from Stanard's Central Drug Store for 25 cents, rubbed it in for hours, and the pain and swelling largely disappeared, prompting praise for Rexall remedies and Stanard's guarantee.
George Anderson Earl Rock and Nellie Simon were discharged from quarantine after scarlet fever. Mabel Orwig recovered from appendicitis and stayed with her aunt Mia James Morrison. Mina Adeline Pendell added to am claw Fred Lyon does extensive hospital papering. A boy and girl arrived at Mei Baker's home Saturday evening. the girl died within hours and was buried Monday while the boy is doing well.
Henry Ro Pattengill of Lansing will deliver an address on Local Detions tomorrow evening at the Methodist church at 8 o'clock. Pattengill is Michigan's premier educator and editor of the School Moderator. No admission charged. Thursday evening at 8.

Snow and rain caused the Sprague Feed barn converted skating rink to collapse. Owner M. Grow faced a property loss of about 1,000 as two iron trusses failed under the weight. A committee led by Mayor Pro tem A P Cook inspected the site, fencing the sidewalk and propping the front wall after the collapse.
Board of Trade members in Alma Mich pledged 10000 to back a stove factory move to town. President Dr J H Lancashire led a wave of donations and a 20000 building cost plan, with several officers organizing funds and committees to solicit nonpresent backers. A factory site of three acres and power infrastructure were key terms for relocation and employment growth.

The Alma Michigan Democratic convention endorsed William J. Bryan for president and George P. Stone as delegate to the Denver convention. Officers were chosen and sworn, with tellers Samuel Wilcox Thomas Grover and George Gargett. Ward officers and committeemen were named, and a resolution pledged support for Bryan and favored George P. as Denver delegate.
