Republican Ward Caucuses Select Delegates for City Convention

Ward caucuses last Monday elected 10 delegates per ward for the city convention at City Hall Friday March 10. First Ward chose C F Brown as chairman with nominees including J E Fuller for Supervisor and F L McConkey for Alderman. Second Ward, Glass chaired with nominees W D Strong for Supervisor and F H Glass for Alderman. Third Ward elected J T Ewing as chairman with C A Plowman named Supervisor and A P Cook among Delegates. Fourth Ward L A Sharp chaired with Clarence Wheeler as Supervisor and L A Sharp to Delegate. Ward committees named for each ward.

Races P M From Saginaw With Doctor Lamb Chauffeur

Bert Reynolds, chauffeur for Dr. BE T Lamb, set a record in a Ford by driving to Saginaw during heavy snow. The doctor saved time by boarding a 7 2 train to Alma, then Reynolds met him at Alma station with the car to finish the trip home. The doctor was pleased with riding the train home.

Mutual Life man keeps second in February race at Detroit Club

J W Blakely, a Mutual Life agent, holds second place for February in the Detroit Field Club standings with a yearly cup on offer from ten Mutual field clubs. January saw the Detroit Club win the cup. Blakely is praised for qualifying at 100000 club and improving yearly. Also notes a Gratiot county M C A banquet at North Star with 60 attendees, speeches on boy development, and a new real estate, loan and insurance office opened by V H Shepard and L M Sweet in Alma.

Union Caucus Nomination Meeting at Arcada Hall

A Union caucus will convene at Arcada township hall on March 10 1916 at 1 20 p m to nominate a township ticket for the spring election. Dated February 26 1916 by order of committee.

Alma to Hold Style Show In City March Week

A movement led by Alma business leaders aims to stage a city style show within weeks likely the week of March 20. Merchants will dress windows with spring displays and reveal them at a set time to showcase upcoming merchandise, driving local pride and competition with larger towns.

Last Wednesday a large gathering of ladies and pastors met at A. H. Olmstead's home to plan further temperance work. The speaker urged prohibition, linking alcohol to crime, poor health, and moral decline, and called for temperance teaching in Sunday schools.

Poisonings Shock South Gratiot Dogs

Old Bank Building Leased to Music House in Alma

Last Monday a three year lease was signed by Mrs Brearly owner of the bank building now occupied by First State Bank. The bank will move in six weeks to new quarters and the former bank building will become the largest music house in Gratiot county run by Alma businessmen. The Farther Lights missionary notoriety event at Minn Frances Priest home featured a lesson by Mrs Angull. New officers for the year were elected: President Mrs John Beeker, Vice president Miss Ivah Perrigo, Secretary Miss Marguerite Moore, Treasurer Miss Ruth Mack. Next March meeting will be with Miss Elsa Strole.

Two Contests Next Week At Local High School

The high school mud itorium will host the final two contests of the declamation and oratorical series to choose a contestant for the district event. On March 15 a high school oratorical contest will be held and on March 17 the final Declamation contest takes place. A small admission of five cents is charged to cover contestant expenses. City school enrollment stood at 682 in January and 2002 end February figures.

Arthur Eugene Graves born August 11 1878 in Dundee Michigan died March 4 1916 at age 38 years 6 months 21 days. Married September 12 1908 to Etta Stebbins they had two daughters. Survived by mother and two sisters Mrs George Hamilton and Mrs Anna Babcock. Career long TB trouble of the throat. Funeral conducted by Capt J H Lamont with Salvation Army officers. remains in Riverdale cemetery.

Democrats Hold Mass Meeting in City Hall Ward Tickets

Delegates at a mass meeting selected city and ward slates. Mayor J. N. Kainerd, Clerk Carl Gallagher, Treasurer Charles Jaerya, Supervisor Ray Steware, Alderman Fred Vor Thur, Constable John Gonwger led the First Ward lineup with Isaac Rascall and Harry Gerber as officials. Kress Urged for Alma Justice Seat After Sandall Resigns

Five managers of the Gratiot County Gas Company met in the city last Saturday to hold a school of instruction. The aim was to solve problems and improve service. The slogan adopted is Service First, Profit a By-Product, with Efficiency as the first word in all branches of the industry.

Several nurses and lady employees at the Michigan Masonic Home held a delightful dancing party Monday evening. About fifteen couples attended and dancing continued until eleven o'clock. All present enjoyed a delightful time.

Alma Girl Wins Third At Oratorical Contest

In a tight Michigan Inter-Collegiate Oratorical contest at Hildale Miss Berniece Ireland of Alma placed third with her oration Human Complements. The event drew about a thousand spectators including delegates from nearby colleges. First went to Miss Hoffman of Albion for Man Mile Morals, second to Miss Kolyn of Hope for Shall It Profit a Man, and seventh place to Gordon of Hilldale with The Political Confusion.
