Alma College honors Miss Mary C Gelston M A longtime Latin teacher and former Lady Principal, with a Mary C Gelston Chair of English Speech endowment. Friends praise her nineteen years of service, discipline, and Christian character, noting her retirement plans and the wish she remain central to Alma’s future English instruction. The campus memorializes her work with a library honoring Joseph W Ewing and a pledge to seek a successor who will uphold her standards.

Graduates With High Honors At Conservatory Exercises

The Michigan Conservatory of Music held graduation at the Detroit Opera House last week. Velma Sharp, a four year student, studied under Alberta Jonas and Victor Renta before graduation with highest honors. She plans to sail August first to continue studies in Viewsat under Professor Lescheticky. Alma High School also graded last Thursday evening at the Opera House with Prof Barbour of Ypsilanti delivering the address, and diplomas awarded by Prof Ellsworth. The Sanitarium park grade graduation occurred last Wednesday afternoon with a strong program by the city schools’ instructors.

Gifted telescope strengthens college astronomy program

Felescouh at the CollMan Aliah College receives a terrestrial and celestial telescope with a four inch lens from HL B Castle of Philadelphia. The instrument will aid astronomy instruction led by Professor Notentein. J P Timbey departed Monday for a business trip to Fort Huron.

The Board of Supervisors met in Ithace Monday and elected John J. Smith of Emerson township as chairman. Committees were appointed by the chair with members named for Taxation, Ways and Means, County Buildings, Roads and Bridges, Drainage, Fines and Salaries.

Pretty wedding at Clow home links Mildred Clow Peck

A wedding was held Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank K. Clow for their daughter Mildred El, who married Grove W. Peck of Areada. Rev TL officiated. The parlor was decorated with white flowers and ferns under a white wedding bell canopy. The bride wore white and carried a rose. the groom in black. Miss Iva Clow and Rudolph Peck assisted. Myrtle Jackson played the wedding march. Bessie Hiler and Lilian Jackson served in the bridal party.

Diploma Honors For Central Michigan Trade Co Worker

Central Michigan Trade Co receives a diploma for high grade bitter produced at the Alma factory. The award recognizes Simon Magedorn and the plant’s work, with celebrating remarks from local officials Gratiot County and Alma city leaders.

Right Reverend Charles D. Williams Elected Bishop

The Right Reverend Charles D. Williams was elected bishop of this diocese last November and consecrated in February. Former rector of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio for thirteen years, he led a campaign to build the cathedral at £559,000 and raised missionary funds for the diocese. He has been active in public life in Cleveland and Michigan affairs and holds degrees from Bethel College and Meade Hall Theological Seminary with a Doctor of Divinity and Director of letters. He is forty five years old and educated at Ohio.

Five Thousand Dollar Bank Insurance Dispute Settled

A Shepherdsby bank lost a $5,000 shipment from Saginaw to Alma. The Bankers Mutual Casualty Co. denied liability but Michigan action showed the firm unauthorized to transact, leading to a legal judgment. Hibbard Burdick paid the insured amount in full last Saturday.

Baptist pastor Receives Community Farewell

Members of the Baptist church and the Young People's Society honored Rev. Higgins with a reception in the church parlors last Monday evening. His pastorate ends July 1st, and friends celebrated the man they hold in high esteem after five years of service. The parlors were crowded with citizens, with pins and wafers served and a musical program. Afterward, a supper at the Bennett Ice Cream Parlor provided further festivities.

Alma to Host State Dairy Education Contest

The Central Michigan Produce Co offered its cold storage in Alma for the State Dairy and Food Commissioners June educational scoring contest. A letter from Deputy Commissioner C C Little announced the state’s plan to use the facilities, marking the event in Alma for the week, a shift from Detroit or Grand Rapids where it was held previously.

Negro excursion ends abruptly in Alma mishap

An excursion party from Alma to St Louis faced a disrupted return after water and train delays. Passengers were forced to halt at the depot, with trains continuing after delays as officials arranged the return, while tickets for the altered trip were recalled.
