Alma College Commencement Week Climaxed by Addresses

Alma College marked its eighteenth commencement with a packed Presbyterian church for baccalaureate and class day events. Rev. Alfred Barr spoke on mastering temptation linking Nehemiah to daily life while Dr. Braske delivered the sermon urging practical ambition within God’s word.

Alma College Commencement and School of Music Recitals

The Commercial School address by W. C. Sprague urged “eyes front” and usefulness in business, with thirteen graduates listed. Kindergarten exercises featured Miss Clara Mingins on work as duty and happiness. Music recitals by Nelle Wallace and Mary DeLong praised, followed by academy commencement with twelve graduates and prize essays.

Musical Recital at Forest Hill Church

The Christian Church in Forest Hill hosted a musical recital by pupils of Mr. LE Canfield on Wednesday evening to a large appreciative audience. The program featured duets, choruses, selections, and an artillery march, with performances by Nellie Stariow, Marty Brady, and others, highlighting careful training and diligent practice.

Gratitude for Help After Storm Burns Redman Barn

During a storm last Monday afternoon the barn of Thomas Redman burned to the ground with 20 tons of hay, tools, a wagon, and a cotter. Neighbors aided under heavy rain and wind to save the home and granary, and thanks are given for their kindness.

Fire Fighters Meet at Thirty-First State Convention in Lansing

The thirty first annual state firemen meeting in Lansing was attended by about 100 firemen over Wednesday and Thursday. E. Bement gave the welcome address in Mayor Lyons absence, replies came from president Pred Edwards of Owosso. Formerly with Alma Record M Evenden Dies in St Louis

M Evenden died at his home in St Louis on Wednesday afternoon from liver cancer after weeks of illness. He was 44, leaving a wife, a son Raymond, a sister Mrs Smith and brother Judge J M Evenden of Ithaca. He partnered with C F Brown on the Alma Broad Road for years, ran the Grazier County Journal in Ithaca, then purchased the St Louis Republican. He later served as deputy oil inspector for two years and was a Knight of Pythias member respected in Michigan editorial circles.

Epler Buys Bert Woodward Property at Superior and Water

The deal closes this week as H Epler acquires the Bert Woodward lot block at Superior and Water streets, comprising six parcels facing Superior. Epler plans a two story 26 by 100 feet building with upstairs living quarters and downstairs store space to be used by himself.

City Adopts Standard Time At City Hall On Saturday

The city will adopt standard time this Saturday evening at seven. The clock in City Hall will strike seven and the water works whistle will signal the hour to aid those who may not hear the clock. This move avoids confusion from two times in the future.
