Union Telephone Co Extends Service Across Michigan
The Union Telephone Co completed its first circuit to Saginaw last Saturday and now serves Saginaw Bay City Flint Port Huron Detroit Jackson and eastern and southeastern points. New exchanges are planned at Breckenridge Merrill and lines will reach Wheeler Redstone North Wheeler Jam Ryan Hemlock and Shields. Ithaca exchange upgrades improve access to St Johns Owosso Tonia and Lansing as well as nearby areas. Grand Rapids based Citizens Telephone Co links Alma with Grand Rapids and west and south. The company emphasizes high quality copper metallic circuits long distance phones and five minute calls to Detroit at a lower rate than shorter two minute calls. The Alma home office remains central with much of the capital locally held. The system aims to extend reach within a 50 mile radius map. A future directory will list towns and subscribers.
