The Great Syndicate circus, one of America’s largest three ring shows, will exhibit in Alma on Tuesday July 21 with two performances at 2 PM and 8 PM. William Sells the noted equestrian rides at every exhibition. Doors open one hour before showtime. Service at St John’s Church next Sunday at 10 o’clock conducted by Rev. Dr. Sweat. Sunday school to follow.

Pioneering Life of Mary A. Weaver in Early Alma Home

Mary A. Weaver and her family endured a grueling 1857 trek from Madise Lake county Ohio to Alma now Gratiot. They faced scarce teams, harsh roads, snow and rain, and built a shanty before moving to a log house. Neighbors like Derwin Ely and Mrs Helen Baker joined in lifelong friendship. Deer, fish, and occasional butter from friends fed them as Weaver farmed, hunted, and survived on maple sugar and syrup until oats and straw could be raised.
