Mammoth Cave Excursion Described by Local Writer

Paul Crandell recounts a Mammoth Cave trip from Kentucky on June 25 1912. He details the Cincinnati to Glasgow journey, the Dinkey ride, crowded hotel, cave torch tours, Star Chamber Martha Washington statue stalactites and stalagmites, Fat Man and Tall Man miseries, Hall of Relief, Echo River boat ride, Corkscrew passage and return to hotel after a long day with songs and laughter.

Vast cave trip reveals depth and distance details

The narrator describes a cave expedition noting five strata or floors, domes thirty to forty feet high, and chasms sixty to seventy feet deep. About one hundred fifty three miles of the cave have been explored so far, with visits focused on the most interesting sections. A supper remains and the party plans to take the Dinkey for the main time.

Warren Creech of Forest narrowly escaped electrocution Friday morning when a live drop wire tangled with a Union Telephone pole step, delivering an 1100 volt shock. He fell, struck his head and a fire hydrant, fracturing his skull but was taken to Brainerd hospital and is improving with a good recovery prospect.

Auto tragedy near Alma claims Mrs Daily life

Mrs Jack Daily died and Mr Daily was seriously hurt when their Buick left the bridge abutment four miles east of Alma. The 70 year old man survived with a dislocated shoulder and shock after the car pitched into a ditch while attempting a sharp corner. The Dailys, longtime Emerson township residents, had just acquired the car.

Accident at Ithaca injures three by fire team

A Mima fire team exhibition in Ithaca on July 4 ran into a crowd near the Seaver House. Three members of Mr Park’s family, living south of the county seat village, were hurt but reported out of danger with no permanent injuries. Witnesses disagreed on details, but all concede it was a pure accident. Driver Mr Peck has driven Alma and Ithaca teams fourteen times previously. this is the first mishap.

Firemen Exhibition Accident Ends Hazardous Drills

Eyewitness account recalls a Fourth of July incident at Pine River and Main where horses bolted as a wagon halted near a hydrant. Firemen attempting to "Snub" fell from the wagon, injuring spectators and damaging property. The Record argues such displays should be curtailed or relocated to safer conditions to protect the crowd.

Ithaca Fourth of July Celebration Draws Thousands in Parade and Games

An estimated five thousand people from Ithaca and surrounding areas attended the Fourth of July celebration in Ithaca last Thursday. A feature auto parade included sixty decorated autos, some adorned with ribbons, flowers, and Japanese parasols. Two close baseball games between Ithaca and Mt. Pleasant Indian School ended 4-2 in the morning and 6-4 in the afternoon, with Alma reporters among the cheering section led by Charles Button.

Petition Filed For Senator Smith Re election

Senator Wm Alden Smith filed re nomination petitions last week with the secretary of state backed by thousands of enrolled Michigan Republicans. The petitions seek a place on the August Republican primary ballot to represent Michigan in the upper house at Wash. The state limit is 2836 signatures, while the minimum is 4412. The maximum number of names has been filed in support of Michigan's senior senator.

Riverdale marked the Fourth with two games between Edmore and Blanchard teams, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each side taking a victory. At Jack Moblo’s home thirty guests from Alma Detroit Grand Rapids Toronto and elsewhere enjoyed dinner and a pleasant day. The Alma Figo Ugo Club met at Mrs Jessie Rockwell’s nine miles west with a luncheon and cheerful afternoon. The Wilbur’s acto trip completed the day.
