In Jackson Michigan two locomotives from Michigan Central and Grand Trunk collided head on at twenty five miles per hour during a Fourth of July display. Eight thousand spectators watched as engineers Warren Stoddard and Connie Wilkes escaped injury though Wilkes sprained an ankle. A long track was built on the fair grounds to stage the crash which left a ruinous pile at the center. Separately in Traverse City Thomas Murphy of Grand Rapids was crushed when a track vehicle toppled onto his feet while he slept beside the depot. He, 85, survived without amputation.
