White men in a sunken canal journey to land of She
An English traveler recounts crossing a marsh by canal, choosing a waterway over death from fever. Exhausted and pursued by mosquitos, they encounter a vast, ritual landscape controlled by a mysterious, shadowy elder. En route they are taken by bearers to a distant shore where the unusual people resemble Africans yet speak Arabic. The narrator awakens aboard a palanquin to meet the land’s ruler, who questions their purpose and origins as the journey continues.
