Alma College Library A Century of Growth and Gifts
The Alma College library, a brick and stone building completed in 1990, houses about 20 000 volumes with extensive periodicals and special collections. It began with a core gift of Britannica from Rev. D M Cooper and 80 religious and literary volumes from Rev. Jas G Inglis, growing into a major state institution with notable items like the Boydell Gallery of Shakespeare.

Seven Michigan factories attended the animal meeting of the Boot Sugar Agriculturists at Wright Honer last Thursday afternoon. Topics of real importance were discussed as the industry plans the coming campaign. The price of seed was cut from 15 to 10 cents per pound, spurring increased acreage contracted for this year. In Justice Court Nightwatch Chas Eastick and a man claiming to be Wr. Smith were jailed for drunken and disorderly behavior on Tuesday night. James Frary pleaded guilty to obtaining foals under false pretenses from K. E. Mobile at Riverdale and posted bail for trial. The case drew a large, respectful crowd as old Gratiot residents watched the proceedings.

New Road Hopes With T M N Railway Mortgage
A $4,000,000 mortgage was recorded in Marshall on Monday, securing Knickerbocker Trust Co. of New York for the old T M N railroad. The plan envisages a steam road from Free Bay City to Montpelier, Ohio, passing through Calhoun, Eaton, Branet, Hilledale, Ionia, Clinton, Gratiot, Midrasht and Bay counties. Steel is already on the route at Olivet and the shop will likely be at Marshall.

Word arrived Monday of the death of Mirahas M Leon at her son Rev C E Scott’s home in Albion Michigan. The body returned Tuesday for a Wednesday afternoon Presbyterian service conducted by Rev WK Spencer of Tonia. Mrs Scott and her husband were early Gratiot county settlers arriving soon after the Civil War, when the village was marsh and the county called Starving Gratiot. She rests beside her husband in Riverside cemetery. a fuller life account for Alma and Gratiot will be published next week.
