Detroit Michigan Central Terminal Opens Vast New Union Depot

Construction of a 2.6 million dollar terminal in Detroit proceeds toward a March 1 start under chief engineer Geo H. Webb. The station, part of the Detroit river tunnel system, will be a tall copper-roofed three story waiting block with 434 foot esplanade frontage and 266 foot depth, plus a 15 story office tower. A major street railway entry and arcade will connect riders to the waiting room, telegraph booths, and news stands, with separate cab and automobile access and extensive marble finishes for travelers.

Alma College Male Quartette Concert at Presbyterian Church

The Alma College male quartet, GW Wright first tenor, R H Hume second tenor, R C Burritt first bass, R H Conk second bass, with Miss Theo Amsbury, accompanist, and R H Hume reader, gave a well rendered concert last Saturday evening. Encores followed each number as the audience expressed hearty approval.

A largely attended meeting at the Wright House organized the Alma Driving Club Association. Officers elected: President W W Cushing, Secretary R M Hyde, Treasurer Decatur Coleman. Mary Ann Ring Dies at 84 in Alma

Mary Ann Ring formerly of Alma died at St John’s on January 1st aged 84. Her remains were brought to Alma and placed in Crandell Scott parlors. Services were held at Parkinson church by Rev W E Doty and she was buried in Brady cemetery. Fire department plans details next week.

Sleigh Ride For Mt Pleasant Sigma Upsilon Pst Fraternity

The Sigma Upsilon Pst fraternity from Mt Pleasant Normal rode to Alma last Saturday and were entertained at Paul G. Kress’s home on State Street. After a 22 mile ride they dined at two decorated tables with a supper prepared by Mrs James G. Kress and Mildred Kress. Performers included Miss McGraham and Miss Gould with vocal solos, Pat Ryat readings, and Louise Travegne. The group afterward attended The Vaudette before returning home.

In a special election held Monday nearly half the city’s voters participated and passed a $30,000 bond issue by 996 to 30. Ward results show Second Ward with 426 votes, 100 for the bond and 30 against, signaling strong tax support for street improvements under Mayor Montigel and the city council.

Nason Home Receives Elk Rapids Lodge Entrant

Peter Johnson now resides at the Nason Home after a transfer from Elk Rapids lodge. A notable incident from his term includes a nearly fatal Fourth of July cannon blast that cost him an eye and severed a hand while leaving a stiff finger and thumb. Wm. F. Ryder of Ottawa lodge, Coopersville, died, aged 78, after general disabilities, with a funeral in the home parlor. Mr and Mrs Carver of Traverse City will visit the superintendent and wife at the Masonic home. Carver formerly held county offices and was Past Master of Traverse City. R. W. Boynton, 87, of Muskegon lodge, is bedbound from leg failure. he was a longtime lawyer and former newspaper editor in Grand Haven and Spring Lake.

Alma student aims to become Catholic priest

A dispatch from Alma reports D. Royal Blaske, a college student, plans to leave Alma for St. Thomas College in Washington DC to pursue priesthood. Blaske, a Traverse City resident, studied at Alma for several years. Also noted is the birth of a baby boy to Mr and Mrs Peter J Milloy of the city, born Sunday January 21st, eight pounds. Peter Miljoy says the boy will soon work as an electrician, expert.
