Injured Employees to Receive Half Pay Under New Plan

A Michigan commission report to Gov. Osborn proposes a compulsory workers compensation scheme. It sets damages at 150 percent of wages for various disabilities, establishes an industrial accident board, and nullifies key defenses in civil damage suits.

Commission findings on attorney fees and damages cited

The commission reports average attorney fees at about 40 percent of judgments. Of 22 cases asked for damages in 1908, 44 percent recovered. The average recovery for partial disability was $1,540. fatal accidents averaged higher. The measure Roosevelt advocated would place the burden on the jury.

Commission backs optional workmen compensation plan

The commission reports 1900s state accidents total 19000 with 220 fatalities and recommends an optional compensation statute. It proposes costs be borne by consumers as part of production, not by employees, with exemptions for self negligence and domestic or agricultural work. Grover Buys Bell Drug Stock at Elsie

John Grover, a registered pharmacist with strong ties to Alma and Gratiot County, has acquired the Bell Drug Stock and wallpaper business at Elsie. The sale makes him owner of one of the oldest shops in Clinton County and he is already in possession of the enterprise.

FARMERS' INSTITUTE PROGRAM AT ARCADIA GRANGE

The Farmers' Institute at Arcadia Grange will be held Friday January 12, 1912. Morning session at 10 o'clock features remarks by Allen Tubbell, readings by Laimont Wood, a talk on Pillage and Rotation of Crops by A B Cook Oworse, and music by the Grange Orchestra. An afternoon session at 1 o'clock includes A B Cook on increasing farm productiveness without live stock, a question box run by A A West, recitations by Mre Song Earl Kuhlman and Floyd Smith, plus more readings and music. Bring June baskets. the Grange will provide coffee at noon.

Paving Bond Question Up for Alma Vote in January

An Alma Common Council meeting discusses a proposed bond issue of thirty thousand seven hundred dollars to finance paving and street improvements. Tons of Castings Shipped From Local Foundry

The Standard PoWtry Manufacturing Company opened their foundry on December 26 and reports full capacity for weeks. First castings were for Detroit parcels, totaling five tons shipped last week. Messrs Waehalac & Young will handle contract work and custom orders from light to heavy gray iron for brass, located opposite the Union depot at State and Mechanic Streets.
