Hundreds Enjoy Treats At Community Christmas Tree

Hundreds of children and their parents attended a community Christmas tree event sponsored by George W. Myers Post 132 of the American Legion. Music by young singers accompanied by parents led to a caroling finale of Holy Night before children lined up to receive gum, popcorn balls, and candy from Legion members and city workers. The event, lit nightly at a tree secured by Dr. C. F. Du Bois, spreading Yuletide joy through giving.

December Crop Report Highlights Strong Fall Conditions

The December crop report from Verne H. Church and John A. Docalle notes unusually favorable fall work with extensive plowing continuing into December. Sugar beet harvest ended by late November, corn crop largely harvested in good condition, and winter wheat acreage down two percent at 1,014,000 acres. Rye plantings down ten percent to 583,000 acres amid favorable crop condition for rye and wheat shifting trends. Helman names Hi Deputies in Gratiot County

Jacob D. Helman of Alma Democrat will be sworn in as sheriff of Gratiot county Monday. He names H R Helman undersheriff and deputies J B Rowell and Ralph Petit, with more to follow. Other county officers take office with the new year including Bernie L. Case in the senate, George W. Long in the state house, Harriet Colwell as clerk, Frank Howes as treasurer, and Luther Carter as drain commissioner. Obituary notices: Jack Rolland Welch, infant son of Mr and Mrs Jessie Welch of Elizabeth street, died December 21 1922 at six weeks four days from pneumonia. Married Saturday: Ronald Ney and Bertha Snyder wed at Rev H H Andersons residence in St Louis.

Bel le Burgland Dead A Alma City Resident Passes Away

Word arrived that Belle Burgland a well known Alma resident died early Tuesday after a hospital visit in Saginaw She was 1878 born in Bay City and moved to Defiance Ohio then Michigan settling in Alma She worked at Gaffney Style Shop for 13 years and funeral services were held at her home later in the day.

Tragic Farmhouse Explosion Claims Mrs Willert

A morning explosion at the Willert farm killed Mrs. Willert wife of Sheriff A T Willert and badly burned Mrs Earl Willert. The blast shattered a 3 gallon oil can scattering burning oil as the family attempted to rescue her. Firefighters saved the house though the room was destroyed. License Plate Sales Urge Rush as Year Ends
