Fred Ligman, Alma Wis bookkeeper and popular local figure, nearly died Sunday after venturing onto thin ice with his dogs at Pine River. He broke ice to reach shore but became entombed, calling for help until Homer Dunham, Win Wilson, and others pulled him to safety after about thirty minutes in the icy water. Dr. Lamb treated him at home on Grant Avenue.
