Albert Eichorn of Ithaca Inez Johnson of Alma and Joe Brennan of Flint figure in a murder mystery in Toils with investigators pursuing key clues and possible motives as the case unfolds.
A confession by David Beaudry and the arrest of Albert Eichorn Mrs Inez Johnson and F Brennen end a long pursuit into the death of 17 year old Miss Beatrice Epler in Alma. Beaudry aided by Detective Powers Prosecuting Attorney Ora L Smith and James G Kress built the case from months of inquiry leading to arrests in Saginaw Flint and Clinton counties.
Michigan notes from W. K. Prudden, Medical Fuel Administrator, detail electricity usage limits under federal order. Street lights, business signs, theaters, porch lights, and fire exits may operate brief periods after sunset with reductions as directed, while all nonessential advertising power is prohibited.

The Alma city council plans a one year lease of the pumping station to Roller Mills for 1996 at 1800. The city will operate the plant and maintain machinery while the Roller Mills handles station upkeep. The Alma chapter organized a women’s committee of the Council of National Defense with Mrs. Henry Soule as chair and an advisory board led by Mrs. Francis King. Frank Zaubax an employee of the Alma plant of the Michigan Sugar company suffered a fractured leg Wednesday afternoon when he fell from on which he was working He was taken to Brainert hospital for treatment.
Alma fire department responded to a blaze at the European Cafe on East SuDe flor steer near midday Tuesday. A stove in the kitchen likely started the fire, causing an estimated loss under 150 dollars. Firemen extinguished the flames with slight difficulty, but meals continued to be served.
Gratiot banks and post offices join in selling War Savings and Thrift stamps as a key savings device for small investors. Led by Francis King and H M Dunham, county organizers urge residents to buy stamps at four dollars and twelve cents each to earn four percent interest, aiding Uncle Sam’s war effort.
Superintendent Schulte reports Alma public schools near 1500 in total enrollment, the largest in district history. He has hired two new teachers, bringing staff to over forty, including Louise Keeler of Elkhart and Ethel Vaughn of Frankfort, to teach fifth, seventh and eighth grades. The National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis urges towns to compete in a Christmas Seal contest to fund a War Tuberculosis Fund. Last year many small communities posted low records, but this year the race is keener with ten population classes and interstate rivalry. Public collection sites operate daily from 1 to 8 p.m. inviting all to contribute.
In Alma amid a fuel crisis the Gratiot County Gas company warns supply could end within two weeks if trucked coal and Kentucky stock do not reach the region. Jotham Alice of Michigan Sugar orders carloads of fuel while officials of the First State Bank keep the directors’ room open for fuel related discussions.
The De Luxe Candy company plans to open OPEN SATURDAY The Paris Cafe in the Gibbs block, in rooms formerly used by the post office. The space has been remodeled with a steel ceiling white painted walls and mirrors around the room. Front fixtures include marble tables and counter, glass coves, and white enamel woodwork. A linoleum floor covers the area and a kitchen has been added with modern restaurant fixtures.
The Presbyterian Aid society held a grease and bake sale at the home of Mr and Mrs Charles G Rhodes last Friday. A bean supper in the evening drew about forty attendees and provided several musical selections. Various articles from the day’s sale were auctioned off. The event cleared 141.57 dollars.
