The Economy Shoe Store awarded prizes Saturday December 4 for the largest beets. Wardwell and Gee tied for first at eight pounds each, with Clark taking third. Mrs. Reed, the sole female entrant, received a gift for her exceptional beet. The event, first planned last September, drew strong farmer participation and will be an annual feature.

Knights of Pythias Fire James Lodge chartered in 1891

The Knights of Pythias Fire James Lodge NeoS received its charter on March 1 1891 and grew from early efforts. Charter members included Th Avains, AL 1 Arsen, Wy PL Bennes, Geo W Berton, and many others. Founding chancellor was Orinda Jo Stillwell, then superintendent of village schools. The lodge built and moved rooms to Alma Realty block, later leasing in Pollasky block. By July 1 the lodge reached 200 members with Sisters' branch nearing 50 in Mama lodge. The order claims about twenty thousand members in the state and around seven hundred thousand worldwide.

Alma lodge chancellor commander elected for second term

Jesse Fuller the Alma lodge Knights of Pythias chancellor commander has been re elected for a second term. A Gratiot County native who moved to Alma in 1902 he built a successful harness shop and grows the lodge with thirty five new members since 1909. He is one of the city's best known lodge men with ties to WASH OOF and the Masons.

Presbyterian S. S. Officers Elected for Next Year

Last Thursday evening a Presbyterian Sunday School elected officers for the coming year. Henry H. Soule is Superintendent with T F Elsworth as Superintendent of Teachers and Rhodes as Enrollment Chief. Mrs Wm Howe leads Cradle Roll, Mrs Chas Rhodes is Home Dept, Lester Von Tham secures, with Robert Cook as Asst Sec and Ariste Hird as Asst Treasurer. Choir duties go to Miss Bertha Melaren and Prof. J T Ewing plays the organ. The school reports prosperity as officers begin duties January 1.
