Alma residents report upcoming entertainments and sales at College Hall and College Mall. Notices mention Minor injuries, new stores, home improvements, smallpox in Michigan towns, and a sheriff’s burglary case with $10.41 taken from W. B. Lothrop & Co. Also noted are moving of stores, church events, a ticket sale, and a Chautauqua circle formation.
The College Chapel hosts an evening of refined performance led by Mr Tlowari praised as a cultivated pulpit speaker. Lelia A Stevens impresses Alma audiences with charm and artistry. A note on local express receipts reports two weeks of November 1878 and 1888 showing Alma’s growing prominence.
The college schedules a Friday noon closing and notes several campus events. Dr Nelson Wits cannot lecture this week, while Dr Koske and Dr McCorkle visited from Saginaw and Ypsilanti. Ten applications for teachers were received amid strong kindergarten training. The firm has ten years in state, 80 members, and offers policies from fifty one cents to 1.43 per thousand with full loss payment. Agent John Norton promotes memberships and applications at reduced prices.
O J Stillwell offers two farms for sale or exchange for valuable property in Alma. G B Porter announces holiday goods and a ten day sale of hats and bonnets at Mrs Messinger. Leather mittens gloves and rubbers offered at low prices. Woolen undergarments flannel hosiery and millinery deeply discounted as store clears inventory.
