Republic Motor Truck Company Reorganized in New York

The Republic Motor Truck Company reorganizes in New York City under a new name and capital. Five directors now run the firm with F W Ruggles as president and general manager, Thomas A Burt and Francia King as vice presidents, Geo W Moore treasurer, and Charles G Rhodes secretary. George H Burr named director, to oversee eastern operations. Capital remains 1,000,000 with 7 percent preferred stock and 62,500 common shares. 750,000 issued. Company has grown rapidly since 1915, with 700 employees and plans to add 300 to 500 more with a new half ton truck plant. A 20 percent stock dividend and transfer of old stock to the new organization were approved.

Alma college taps H A Helmer as athletic chief

Alma college announces H A Helmer, a former Alma athlete and longtime Central Normal School athletic director in Mt. Pleasant, will become head of the athletic department this September. He succeeds W C Bleamaster who moves to the University of Moscow Idaho. Helmer helped build strong teams at the Normal and Alma, led in football track and baseball, and was active in Y M A and Zeta Sigma.

Wife shoots husband in Mt Clemens tragedy

Mrs. Ermel Pettit fatally wounded Roy Pettit with five shots at their North Walnut Street home in Mt Clemens. She told authorities a rival woman entered his life and later exclaimed I killed your baby boy. Pettit, a Mt Clemens hotel night clerk, had lived in Ithaca and Alma after studying at the University of Michigan. Local prosecutor says murder charges stand. Pettit is in critical condition awaiting arraignment.

Gratiot County Fair Updates Boosted Grounds and Entries

The Gratiot County Fair reports major improvements including a 120 foot new horse stable, ongoing sheep and hog barn construction, and a relaid track in excellent condition. More entries have been registered than ever before, with Wednesday of market week highlighted as the fair's opening day.

Bankers Choose Alma For Annual Michigan Banquet

H C Moore cashier Alma State Savings Bank announced the fifth group banquet of the Michigan Bankers Association will be in Alma on September 12 with nine counties represented Saginaw Bay Gladwin Avena Tuscola Midland Clare and Gratiot among others. Prominent speakers are set to address the gathering and farmers are urged to check grain prices with Alma market leading county markets by two to five cents on wheat last week. Wheat shipments to Alma come from about twenty miles away.

Voters in Alma are set to cast what may be the largest tally in years for the city primaries and county offices. A $100,000 bonding proposal for water and sewer extensions and a municipal power plant is expected to pass with little opposition, while county races show limited activity and Governor candidates see minimal campaigning. The state senate contest between Damon and Newel Smith offers the only real excitement, with Damon favored in many areas and Smith pursuing a tight race amid rotation debates.

Fordney Eyes renomination and tariff plan outlines

Washington correspondence says the Wilson era may end in November with a Republican victory and a Republican House. J W Fordney, likely Ways and Means chair, would push a five point tariff program including repeal of existing tariffs, repeal of war revenue taxes, a production cost tariff commission, anti dumping measures, and a new difference in production costs to tax competitive goods. If reelected, Fordney expects passage and says preparedness could begin by July. Voters praise his record, while Alma cites funding for a government building as a local credit to his tenure. A separate note: Mise Surka Hibkons, head of Black Languages and Literature, will lecture at St. John’s Church on Through Slavic Lands with slides from her travels.

Corner Stone Laid at New County Poor House Ceremony

The corner stone of the new county poor house was laid Friday with the building committee and County Poor Board present. A copper box bearing Pettit’s name and contents from 1916 era was placed inside, including history, photos, and campaign cards. Plan Raises Taxes Slightly for City Bonds Vote

L. Bennett, of Alma, has purchased the Sharrar & Wheeler General Insurance Agency and will assume control immediately. He rents offices in the Opera House Block and plans full office setup. Bennett, with twenty years in business, leads the largest agency in the area representing four percent companies backed by 500 million dollars. The firm handles fire, auto, life, tornado, plate glass, accident, liability, and compensation insurance bonds. Bennett will devote full time to the business. In Alma, Allen S.
