Large vote expected at primaries Tuesday
Voters in Alma are set to cast what may be the largest tally in years for the city primaries and county offices. A $100,000 bonding proposal for water and sewer extensions and a municipal power plant is expected to pass with little opposition, while county races show limited activity and Governor candidates see minimal campaigning. The state senate contest between Damon and Newel Smith offers the only real excitement, with Damon favored in many areas and Smith pursuing a tight race amid rotation debates.

Fordney Eyes renomination and tariff plan outlines
Washington correspondence says the Wilson era may end in November with a Republican victory and a Republican House. J W Fordney, likely Ways and Means chair, would push a five point tariff program including repeal of existing tariffs, repeal of war revenue taxes, a production cost tariff commission, anti dumping measures, and a new difference in production costs to tax competitive goods. If reelected, Fordney expects passage and says preparedness could begin by July. Voters praise his record, while Alma cites funding for a government building as a local credit to his tenure. A separate note: Mise Surka Hibkons, head of Black Languages and Literature, will lecture at St. John’s Church on Through Slavic Lands with slides from her travels.

Plan Raises Taxes Slightly for City Bonds Vote
City Attorney James A Greene presents figures supporting a planned $100000 bond issue for water and sewer extensions. He argues annual general tax impact over 20 years would be about 0.014 per cent per $1000 valuation, with $800 sewer and $485.42 water shortfalls covered by taxes. He warns a piecemeal plan could raise costs by 20 percent or more. The plan will be put to voters at the primaries.
