Gratiot County Draft Board Totals Exemption and Non Exemption

Gratiot County draft officials slowly process exemption claims and prepare a further call for 40 men whose exemptions were refused, joining 118 who did not file exemptions. C A Miller Alma resident has become assistant sales manager for Republic Motor Truck Company moving to the new role at the start of the week. Former sales agent for Western Sales in Grand Rapids, he previously owned and ran the Schohour theatre in Alma and will balance both responsibilities with Republic.

Illinois Picnic Comes Saturday in Wright Park

The annual Illinois picnic for former Illinois residents in Central Michigan, held at Wright Park, will occur Saturday August 24 with a daylong program featuring a noon basket dinner, music, and addresses. Alma College Sabbatical Granted For Year

Prof Hansford M MacCavity and Nathan N Bradley of Alma College receive a sabbatical year to pursue research. Prof L A Stearns will replace MacCavity, while MarCurdy plans studies at Johns Hopkins. The board funds full salary to support yearlong research benefitting Alma College and future attendees. Freight on Fire in Alma Damages Train Car Furnishings

Alma Fire Department responded around 2:00 am to a freight train fire when a hotbox ignited a tar covered car. The truck halted at State Street and the blaze was quickly fought. The car carried house furnishings, which suffered heavy damage.

Dale Wiley five year old son of Mev and Mrs Claude Wiley was instantly killed when a heavy farm wagon wheel passed over his head near his home. The wagon had just been mended and started to run away as the boy, driving, fell from the seat. His skull was crushed and death was instantaneous.
