Gratiot County draft officials slowly process exemption claims and prepare a further call for 40 men whose exemptions were refused, joining 118 who did not file exemptions. The board lists all exempted and refused cases so far, with many married men and families, as it plans to reach a quota of 274 men.
Thirty-second in Camp Grayling notes Provost Marshal Chapman and Sheriff Cody secured promise from local saloon keepers not to sell liquor to be drunk off premises. C A Miller Alma resident has become assistant sales manager for Republic Motor Truck Company moving to the new role at the start of the week. Former sales agent for Western Sales in Grand Rapids, he previously owned and ran the Schohour theatre in Alma and will balance both responsibilities with Republic.
The annual Illinois picnic for former Illinois residents in Central Michigan, held at Wright Park, will occur Saturday August 24 with a daylong program featuring a noon basket dinner, music, and addresses. Organizers expect several hundred attendees from Michigan and adjacent counties, continuing a long tradition of reunions and farm families gathering for this outing.
Mr Howard Reed of Mt Pleasant brings a new drug store to Alma to occupy the Bekert building corner Burlid avenue and East Superior Street. The venture aims to open by early September when the lease begins. Reed and his brother bring extensive drug experience from Mt Mennant and the pair prepared stock and imagery for the Alma location.
Miss Frankie Kuhlman of Arenda township married Eldon Hagene Down of Newark township Tuesday evening August 7 at the bride’s parents home.
Prof Hansford M MacCavity and Nathan N Bradley of Alma College receive a sabbatical year to pursue research. Prof L A Stearns will replace MacCavity, while MarCurdy plans studies at Johns Hopkins. The board funds full salary to support yearlong research benefitting Alma College and future attendees. The wedding march for the reception followed the ceremony with Edna Kuhlmas and Stearns present. The couple will reside in East Lansing after September 1.
The Alma public schools will gain new teachers for the fall term as enrollment is expected to surge due to city growth. Most faculty slots are filled, with one remaining fifth grade vacancy. Superintendent Schultz urges high school students to plan classifications early and notes temporary school facilities will delay full class placement until new buildings are ready.
The Rule grocery store at 1216 East Superior near Plant Three of Republic Motor Truck Company changed hands this week. J. W. Leahy of Mt Pleasant purchased the business and took immediate possession, after previously running a Mt Pleasant shop for years and recently selling it to relocate to Alma. Leahy’s ad on the page signals the new venture and its value.
Alma Fire Department responded around 2:00 am to a freight train fire when a hotbox ignited a tar covered car. The truck halted at State Street and the blaze was quickly fought. The car carried house furnishings, which suffered heavy damage.
Provisions detail the September call of two hundred thousand men from the first 657,000 for the national army. The Garden Club of Alma invites women interested in growing flowers or vegetables to a meeting at Mrs Francis King's home on Saturday August 25 at 3 PM. King’s work with the National Women’s Garden Association highlights her preparedness efforts and leadership in the women’s volunteer movement.
Dale Wiley five year old son of Mev and Mrs Claude Wiley was instantly killed when a heavy farm wagon wheel passed over his head near his home. The wagon had just been mended and started to run away as the boy, driving, fell from the seat. His skull was crushed and death was instantaneous.
The plan outlines a 60 by 50 foot expansion with two new buildings to increase capacity. Henry Schmidt holds the contract for fireproof construction and a concrete coal unloading truss will replace the current track. A six foot fence and ornamental iron front fence accompany paving of the rear yard and new benches boilers retorts will be installed. City mains will be extended to meet rising demand.
Alma residents plan a Red Cross garden party at Orchard House on Thursday evening with lanterns, music, refreshments, fortune telling, flowers, and a 25 cent admission. Proceeds fund yarn purchases for Red Cross work. if Thursday is rained out, the event moves to Friday or Saturday.
