Par-Kar Coach Company Starts Production in St Louis

Par-Kar Coach Company, now based in the Bellstrom factory in St Louis after moving from Detroit, begins production this week with ample orders. A Grand Rapids contract worth 101000 and a 10000 initial payment were announced, six buses due by September 7 and 21 within sixty days, cash basis work, chassis to be completed in a week, and optimism that Alma and St Louis will collaborate to build a successful operation.

Deaths Rise and Births Fall in Michigan Half Year

A Michigan Health Department report for the first six months of 1922 shows 329 more deaths than the same period in 1921 and 5502 births recorded. The death rate remains 11.8 per 1,000 population, the lowest on record, while population growth keeps the rate steady. Deaths January to July totaled 25,181 versus 22,852 the prior year. 43,484 births occurred in the latter half of the year versus 49,476 last year.

St Louis Builds New Depot With Tile Brick Walls

The Pore Marquette railroad awards the depot contract to Spence Brothers of Saginaw. Ground is broken for a tile brick depot, 21 by 64 feet, with a large waiting room and basement. City paving and landscaping planned, promising an impressive railroad entrance for St Louis this fall.

Northern Gratiot County Holds Most Wealth and People

Four northern townships plus Alma and St. Louis hold almost half of the county’s equalized value and about half the population. Alma and St. Louis alone account for roughly 31 percent of value and 31 percent of residents, while Sumner Arcada Emerson Lafayette and others in the middle and southern bands trail in total population and value. The northern block’s wealth and people form a clear majority despite occupying less than half the county’s territory.

Thelen Family Nominate William Smith Petition

Thelen family farmers from Bengal Dallas and Westphalis townships in Clinton County circulated a petition for Commissioner William M Smith of the State Public Utilities Commission running for Congress in the Eighth District. Sixty one women signed the petition. 15 former Thelen members had signed other petitions before this exclusive effort. The family stressed all signers are Republicans and wholly for Smith.

Old Resident Mrs Baker Dies After Long Illness

Laura Ann Ferguson Baker, longtime Alma resident and wife of James A. Baker, died August 10 after a three year illness ending with a stroke on July 24. Born May 20 1853 in Howell Michigan, she moved with family to Shiawassee County at age five and married in 1875. She leaves husband two sons Claude and Ray a brother two sisters and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the family home with Riverside cemetery interment.

Moore Injured When Automobiles Collide

Floyd Moore of this city was badly hurt Friday morning when his automobile and another car collided on Superior street while he was on his way to work. Hugh Wishmire, driving north from Alma, did not notice Moore's car until the near collision. Both drivers braked, the wet street caused skidding, and Moore was thrown from the car as his steering wheel grip broke.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Recalls Fifty Married Years

Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Davis of 682 Gratiot avenue celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Married August 15, 1872 in Charlotte Michigan, they began life in Eaton Rapids, later moving to Alma in 1884 where they have resided. They had two sons, William Aaron and Edward Oscar. Edward died in infancy. They quoted a verse by D. Faunce and reflected on a life of sunshine with the memory of their late son. Ad ends with a wood sale advertisement from Rudeck & Duncan.

Electrocution at Alma: Merritt Miller dies after line work

Merritt Miller of Central Michigan Light & Power was electrocuted Wednesday afternoon while installing a transformer on a pole for Continental Utilities Co in Alma. Doctors attempted to revive him with a pul motor but failed. He was the son of Mr and Mrs J W Miller of west Alma and a graduate of Alma High School. The funeral is set for Saturday with services at 2 PM in the Methodist Church.
