Poisoning death claims two farmers near Forest Hill
Two men in their forties, William Thomas and William Freese, died after eating poisoned meat bought in Shepherd. Thomas, a farmer, died a week after illness and was buried last Friday. Work to Start Soon on Pere Marquette Freight House

Claussen Recital Closes Alma Chautauqua Program
Alma’s fourth chautauqua closed with Mme Julia Claussen soprano contralto of the Chicago Grand Opera Company in a celebrated recital assisted by violinist Pierre Henrette and pianist Marcel Charlier. The tent was packed and encores followed. Claussen’s versatile program included Schubert and Massenet arias and other pieces with strong violin and piano accompaniment. The Redpath Chautauqua organization planned further programming for 1917, promising a bright season as Alma's chautauqua spirit drew large crowds this summer.
