Alma residents filled both afternoon and evening performances as the Redpath Chautauqua attracted strong attendance and praise. The Republic band of forty five pieces educated Alma’s taste for band music, and superintendent Mr Chamberlain left with many new friends, hinting at a 1918 return. Local tobacconists boosted cigarette prices during the week, raising ten and fifteen cent packages to higher rates as demand grew.

Five Injured In Car Crash Near Ithaca Recovering
Mr and Mrs Frank Stone and Mr and Mrs Willard Rowe with Elaine Rowe were hurt when their car veered onto a ditch after hitting a bad hump on the road to Ithaca. Mrs Stone endured brain concussion a broken jaw and multiple injuries. Elaine suffered a broken left leg. all are expected to recover. Rowe suffered minor injuries and will be confined to bed briefly. The Stones previously ran the local Central Michigan Light and Power office. Rowe is its current manager.

William G. Washburn a 68 year old farmer died suddenly on his farm near the city last Saturday. He was born near Pontiac Michigan April 4 1849 and lived there until 1802 when he moved to Gratiot county near Alma. He is survived by his wife a father and four daughters Mrs Charles Murphy Mrs Frank Cross Mrs Maron Cross and Mrs Frank Parker and a son Carl H Washburn. The funeral was held from the farm Tuesday afternoon Rev T G R Brownlow officiating with interment at Riverside cemetery. Army May Adv.
