Fourth Chautauqua Opens in Wright Park State i Monday

Alma's fourth annual summer chautauqua opened under Redpath Chautauqua Bureau at Wright Park amid heat wave. Killarney Girls entertained a large audience, followed by a concert and William Rainey Bennett lecture on "The Man Who Can." Weather and crowd conditions affected ticket sales. future dates uncertain but strong enthusiasm suggested for 1917.

TWO NEW SUBDIVISIONS IN ALMA REPORTED

Two more subdivisions announced in Alma, making five in three months. Michigan Avenue Heights covers forty acres near Kingsbory farm east of the city, while Elm Grove spans eighty acres of the Derusha farm, also east of Alma. Company officers' names withheld. subdivision work to begin with terrace, walks, trees, and sewerage and water installations.

Nomination Fight Heats Up In New Mexico Governorship

Ralph Ely, former public schools superintendent and Alma College graduate, leads Republican nomination talk in New Mexico as Democrats fear Ely's potential prevail. Bly, popular in Mexico for irrigation advocacy, is also noted. Democratic plans begin after primaries to counter Ely in the race.

Council Passes On 100000 Bonding Issue

The Alma city council approved a 144000 water and sewer bond package for municipal improvements including a water plant, library site, and park upgrades. A committee will work with City Attorney Greene before presenting to voters. An additional 40,000 for water mains, 35,000 for sewer extension, 8,000 for library site, and 2,000 for park work were included. The special election date will be set later. The council also passed an alley and street width ordinance for new divisions. Withdrawal of L D Dickinson from the Republican gubernatorial race boosts Diekema’s Michigan campaign prospects.

Republic Motor Truck Plant Groundbreaking and New Bonus Plan

The Republic Motor Truck Company will break ground Friday for a $50,400 plant to build a new half ton truck. The 1000 by 60 foot facility, east of the city, supports expansion and separate supervision from the old plant. E. M. Orr explains a bonus system tied to production to boost efficiency with no cap on earnings. production goals set per operation. A two ton test unit is sent to Columbus for federal demonstration.

Recital At Church Of Christ Draws Large Audience

A large audience heard Mr Meade BE Dott in a Friday night recital at the Church of Christ despite intense heat. Dott displayed a rich bari tone and skillful control with a versatile program of classical and popular numbers. Accompanist Miss Ruth Bennett impressed with several numbers. Miss Etta Tonkin Detroit offered readings well received.

July hottest month with 102 degree high record

Local Observer P. M. Smith reports July as the hottest month in 29 years with a 102 degree high. Mean max 88, mean min 62, average 76. Total rainfall 0.56 inches, with 0.60 inches on the 1st. July had 25 clear days, 7 partly cloudy, and one cloudy day, with three storm events on the 13th 20th and 22nd.

Alma School of Methods closes session with 61 certificates

The Alma School of Methods held its graduating exercises at the college chapel led by Dr. John Steel of Winona Lake Indiana. Dr Alfred Ray Atwood dean presented diplomas. Sixty one International Sunday School certificates and fifty denominational teacher training certificates were awarded.

McFall Becomes Sole Owner Of Local Barber Shop

Playground and Recreation Association to Hold Tenth Anniversary

The tenth annual anniversary of the Playground and Recreation Association of America will be in Grand Rapids on October 26. Ralph E. Hedges of Grand Rapids seeks local engagement, with Alma attendees likely. speakers include Secretary Baker General Wood and Governor Ferris. The association will establish offices in Michigan to promote playground development statewide, with a Grand Rapids location at Miner's Annex. Miner's Annex, a new restaurant by Henry and Vern Miner, opens early this week on Michigan avenue opposite the Republic to serve factory workers and the public.

Board of Trade Buys 46 Acres for Buildings

The Board of Trade authorized the purchase of 46 acres from the A. W. Wright estate south of Ely Street and west of Hoover Avenue for 15 000.00. They also acquired 20 acres from Thomas Grover west of Greer Avenue toward the Ann Arbor Railroad for 4 000.00. Alma Home and Improvement Association takes control of Wright property at 200 per acre, plans ten new homes by contractor Henry Soule, and may plat remaining acreage for factory use while aiming to reach 125 homes in progress.
